Chapter 13 - THE BROTHER WHO WANTED EVERYTHING

Marco walked into the abandoned Brooklyn courthouse believing he had won.
Hunter stood alone beneath the ruined ceiling.
The ledger was in her hands.
"Where's Lorenzo?"
Marco asked.
"Not here."
"Smart."
"No."
Hunter looked at him.
"Different."
Marco smiled.
"You look like Rebecca."
"Don't say her name."
"She was my mother too, in a way."
"No."
Hunter's voice sharpened.
"She was afraid of you."
Marco's smile vanished.
Hunter held up the ledger.
"You killed Sophia."
"You caused Lily's death."
"You poisoned Leo."
"You destroyed everyone who might have called you family."
Marco stepped closer.
"They had everything."
"And I had nothing."
"So you became nothing."
Rage filled his face.
He raised his gun.
Hunter didn't move.
"Give me the ledger."
"No."
"I'll kill you."
Hunter looked directly at him.
"Then everybody will finally know what you are."
Marco laughed.
"Who?"
Hunter pointed toward the ceiling.
A red light blinked.
Camera.
Marco froze.
Every word had been recorded.
Outside, federal agents surrounded the building.
Marco's face collapsed.
"You bitch."
He fired.
Hunter dropped.
Lorenzo appeared from behind a pillar and tackled him.
They crashed through a railing.
Marco grabbed Lorenzo's throat.
"You always take everything!"
Lorenzo punched him.
Marco reached for the fallen gun.
Hunter kicked it away.
Federal agents rushed in.
Marco screamed.
"Kill me!"
Lorenzo stood over him.
For the old Lorenzo Rossi, the decision would have taken half a second.
Hunter watched him.
Leo's face entered Lorenzo's mind.
Sophia.
Lily.
Everything violence had taken.
Lorenzo stepped backward.
"No."
Marco stared.
Lorenzo's voice was calm.
"You're going to live."
"For the trial."
"For the cameras."
"For every person whose life you destroyed."
Agents dragged Marco away screaming.
Hunter looked at Lorenzo.
"You could've killed him."
"I know."
"Why didn't you?"
Lorenzo looked at her.
May you like
"Because my son is going to grow up with a father."
That was the day the Rossi empire truly died.
