CHAPTER 15 — THE SANCTUARY

The countdown echoed relentlessly through the Founder Archive.
11:30.
Every second sounded louder than the last.
Leo stared at the blank monitor where Sofia had disappeared only moments earlier.
His fingers slowly curled into fists.
She was alive.
Not a recording.
Not another prototype.
She was alive.
Yet she had begged him not to come.
For the first time since discovering the truth, Leo hesitated.
Beatrice pounded both hands against the steel barrier separating them from Mateo and Claire.
"Leo!"
"I'm here."
"I can't see you."
"You don't have to."
"I'll find another way."
Prototype Zero leaned weakly against the wall.
Blood continued dripping from her nose.
Her breathing had become shallow.
Lily walked toward her again.
Leo instinctively reached for his daughter.
"Lily."
The little girl looked back.
"She isn't bad."
Prototype Zero smiled faintly.
"I don't have much time."
"What do you mean?" Leo asked.
"My neural pattern is collapsing."
Elena's voice came through an emergency intercom on the opposite side of the barrier.
"Leo!"
"Can you hear me?"
"Yes."
"There should be a maintenance corridor beneath the western staircase."
Prototype Zero nodded immediately.
"She's right."
Leo looked at her.
"How do you know?"
"I remember..."
She pressed trembling fingers against her temple.
"...pieces."
"Not everything."
"But enough."
The archive trembled violently.
Chunks of marble crashed from the ceiling.
The automated voice returned.
10:54.
STRUCTURAL FAILURE DETECTED.
Across the barrier, Claire examined an old architectural map displayed on a damaged terminal.
"There."
She pointed toward a faded blueprint.
"The Founder Archive was built with emergency escape tunnels."
Mateo studied it carefully.
"They split into two routes."
Elena's expression darkened.
"One leads outside."
"And the other?" Claire asked.
Elena remained silent.
Daniel Mercer laughed despite the pain from his gunshot wound.
"The Sanctuary."
Everyone turned toward him.
He slowly pushed himself against the wall.
"You'll never reach Sofia without passing through it."
Beatrice looked at him coldly.
"Tell us where it is."
"You already know."
"We don't."
"You simply haven't understood the map."
On Leo's side of the barrier, Lily suddenly knelt beside the blue hologram still projected from her silver falcon locket.
The image had changed.
Instead of two paths, it now showed three.
One blue.
One crimson.
One gold.
Prototype Zero stared at it.
"No..."
Leo frowned.
"What?"
"There were never three routes."
Lily gently touched the golden path.
Immediately, the map expanded.
Hidden corridors appeared beneath the original blueprint.
Entire sections of the underground complex had never been visible before.
Claire's voice came through the intercom.
"The system updated."
Mateo looked astonished.
"It wasn't hidden from the archive."
"It was hidden from Antonio."
Prototype Zero whispered,
"Sofia..."
"She changed it."
Leo finally understood.
"Resistance Protocol."
Prototype Zero nodded.
"She left one last secret."
Another violent tremor shook the chamber.
The ceiling cracked open.
Sunlight filtered through the widening fracture above.
Smoke poured downward.
The estate above them was collapsing.
Meanwhile, Isabella Romano remained motionless on Antonio's monitor.
She had spoken nothing since revealing herself.
Now she looked directly into the camera.
Then, unexpectedly, she addressed Lily.
"My child..."
Lily tilted her head.
"I'm not your child."
"No."
"But you carry the choice I once failed to make."
Leo watched Isabella carefully.
Unlike Antonio, she never sounded manipulative.
Only tired.
Only remorseful.
She continued.
"I believed knowledge could save humanity."
"Antonio believed control could."
"I created Falcon."
"He transformed it."
Claire quietly recorded every word.
"This confession alone could destroy everything."
Antonio's voice suddenly interrupted.
"No."
The monitors flickered.
His image replaced Isabella's.
"You still think governments matter."
"They won't."
"You still think exposing Falcon changes history."
"It doesn't."
Leo stepped toward the nearest camera.
"You've already lost."
Antonio smiled.
"Have I?"
He touched something outside the camera's view.
Another screen activated.
This one showed the surface above Rossi Estate.
Black helicopters.
Military vehicles.
Dozens of armed personnel surrounding the property.
None wore government insignia.
Only the silver falcon.
Claire's face tightened.
"Private armies."
Antonio nodded.
"Three nations."
"Five intelligence services."
"Thirty-two corporations."
"All waiting."
"For what?" Leo demanded.
"For the result."
"What result?"
Antonio's smile widened.
"Whichever bloodline survives today..."
"...inherits tomorrow."
The transmission ended.
Silence returned.
Only the countdown remained.
09:42.
Prototype Zero suddenly staggered.
Lily caught her before she fell.
The woman looked at Leo.
"I remember something else."
"What?"
"The white lake."
"The elevator."
"The room beneath the chapel."
Leo leaned closer.
"Is Sofia there?"
Prototype Zero closed her eyes.
"I don't know..."
"But..."
"...she told me never to trust the first door."
Leo repeated the words quietly.
"Never trust the first door."
Beatrice heard them through the intercom.
She froze.
"My mother used to say that."
Everyone looked toward her.
"When I was little..."
"...we played a game."
"She always told me..."
"'The first door is built for people who stop thinking.'"
Elena inhaled sharply.
"That's not a game."
"It's a Romano code."
Beatrice slowly realized what it meant.
"My mother knew about the Sanctuary."
Elena answered,
"Long before Antonio."
The steel barrier suddenly shuddered.
Hidden bolts began unlocking one by one.
Mateo looked up.
"We didn't activate that."
Claire aimed her weapon.
"Who's opening it?"
No one answered.
A narrow gap appeared between the massive doors.
Only a few centimeters.
Then a child's voice echoed from the darkness beyond.
Soft.
Calm.
Almost familiar.
"Lily..."
Everyone froze.
Lily looked toward the opening.
"I know that voice."
Leo immediately pulled her behind him.
"No."
The voice came again.
"Genny..."
Prototype Zero's eyes flew open.
"No..."
"No, that's impossible."
Beatrice frowned.
"What's wrong?"
Prototype Zero whispered with visible fear.
"Only one person ever called Lily by that name."
Leo's heartbeat quickened.
"Who?"
Prototype Zero looked directly at him.
"...the child who disappeared before Sofia."
The gap between the steel doors widened a little farther.
A tiny hand appeared through the opening.
Then another.
The lights flickered violently.
The countdown continued.
08:57.
The tiny hand remained perfectly still.
No one dared move.
The emergency lights flickered again, throwing long shadows across the cracked marble floor.
Leo instinctively stepped in front of Lily.
"Stay behind me."
Lily stared at the narrow gap between the steel doors.
"I know that voice."
Prototype Zero shook her head violently.
"No..."
"She can't be here."
Beatrice looked at her.
"Who is she?"
Prototype Zero swallowed hard.
"The first child."
"The first successful Resistance subject."
Elena's voice crackled through the damaged intercom.
"Project Genesis began before Lily."
Claire immediately looked toward Daniel Mercer.
"You knew."
Daniel smiled weakly.
"We all knew."
"You buried the records."
"We buried the child."
A cold silence spread through the chamber.
Mateo's voice came from the opposite side of the barrier.
"Buried?"
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"Officially."
"The truth is much worse."
The small figure finally stepped through the opening.
She looked no older than nine.
Long dark hair.
Bare feet.
A simple white dress.
Her expression was calm beyond her years.
She looked directly at Lily.
Then smiled.
"Hello, Genny."
Lily frowned.
"My name is Lily."
The little girl nodded gently.
"I know."
"They renamed you."
Leo felt every muscle in his body tighten.
"Who are you?"
The child answered without fear.
"My name..."
"...is Eva."
Prototype Zero closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Eva..."
"You were alive."
Eva looked toward Prototype Zero.
"So were you."
"I thought Antonio erased you."
"He tried."
"But Sofia hid me."
Leo took one cautious step forward.
"You know Sofia?"
Eva smiled.
"She saved my life."
Beatrice immediately asked,
"Where is she?"
Eva pointed toward the golden route projected by Lily's locket.
"The Sanctuary."
"But you're already too late."
The countdown echoed again.
08:11
The archive shook violently.
Concrete slabs crashed into the corridor.
Some of the awakened sleepers began helping one another to safety.
Others stood silently, staring at Lily as if waiting for instructions.
Claire's voice came over the intercom.
"Leo!"
"We found another passage."
"It joins your corridor in approximately fifty meters."
"Keep moving."
Leo looked at Eva.
"Can you lead us?"
"Yes."
"But only Lily can open the last gate."
Lily looked frightened.
"I don't know how."
Eva crouched until they were eye level.
"You already opened the first one."
"You just didn't realize it."
Prototype Zero suddenly cried out in pain.
She fell to both knees.
Her breathing became irregular.
Fragments of memories appeared across the remaining active monitors.
Sofia laughing beside a lake.
Antonio standing inside a laboratory.
A young Beatrice running through a garden with her mother.
Then another image appeared.
Antonio arguing with Isabella.
The audio crackled.
"We are protecting humanity," Antonio insisted.
"No," Isabella replied.
"We are deciding who deserves to be human."
The recording froze.
Every person in the chamber stared silently.
Leo whispered,
"So that's how it began."
Not with greed.
Not with power.
But with a single decision that no one should ever have been allowed to make.
Prototype Zero reached toward Leo.
"There..."
"...there's something else."
He knelt beside her.
"What is it?"
"My memories..."
"They weren't copied."
Leo frowned.
"What do you mean?"
She smiled sadly.
"They were divided."
Claire had just reached the other side of the barrier with Mateo and Beatrice's mother when she heard those words.
"Divided?"
Prototype Zero nodded weakly.
"Antonio couldn't duplicate Sofia completely."
"So he split her neural map."
"Into different vessels."
Leo felt his blood run cold.
"You."
"Yes."
"And..."
Prototype Zero looked toward Eva.
"...her."
Everyone turned.
Eva lowered her eyes.
"I remember the years before Lily."
Prototype Zero whispered,
"I remember the years after."
Tears filled Leo's eyes.
"So neither of you is Sofia..."
Prototype Zero slowly shook her head.
"But together..."
"...we remember everything she wanted protected."
At that moment, Lily's silver falcon locket emitted a clear chime.
The holographic map zoomed toward a single point beneath the estate.
A circular chamber.
Its label appeared for the first time.
SANCTUARY CORE
Eva looked at the image.
"She's waiting."
Leo stood immediately.
"We're going."
Daniel Mercer laughed again despite his worsening condition.
"You still don't understand."
Mateo pointed his weapon at him.
"Then explain."
Daniel looked directly at Leo.
"If you enter the Sanctuary..."
"...one person must stay behind."
Beatrice frowned.
"Why?"
"The Core only opens once."
"And?"
"When it closes..."
"...someone must remain inside to seal Founder Protocol forever."
Silence.
Leo looked at Lily.
Then at Beatrice.
Then toward the glowing map.
Claire broke the silence.
"We'll decide when we get there."
Daniel smiled.
"No."
"The system already has."
Every screen still functioning suddenly lit up.
A single sentence appeared across them all.
FINAL CUSTODIAN IDENTIFIED
The text vanished.
A photograph replaced it.
Not Leo.
Not Lily.
Not Beatrice.
Mateo Calder.
Mateo stared at the screen in disbelief.
"No..."
Claire slowly lowered her weapon.
Antonio's voice returned one final time.
"I chose Leonardo to inherit Falcon."
"But Genesis..."
"...chose the man who never wanted power."
Mateo looked toward Leo.
Neither man spoke.
Years of friendship passed between them in silence.
Then the archive shook harder than ever before.
The ceiling split open.
Daylight poured into the underground chamber.
Eva grabbed Lily's hand.
"The entrance is opening."
Prototype Zero smiled peacefully.
"I can feel Sofia."
Leo looked toward the golden passage.
Somewhere beyond it...
...his wife was alive.
But the system had already demanded a sacrifice.
And now it had chosen who would make it.
The countdown reached:
05:00
Then every alarm inside the Founder Archive stopped at once.
A calm female voice echoed from deep within the Sanctuary.
Not Antonio.
Not Isabella.
Not Eva.
Not Prototype Zero.
The real Sofia spoke only one sentence.
"Leo..."
May you like
"...don't let Mateo choose for you."
