CHAPTER 12 — THE FOUNDER'S MAZE

The first gunshot shattered the darkness.

Concrete dust burst from the ceiling as bullets ricocheted through the ruined archive.

Leo lunged toward Lily without hesitation.

"Down!"

Mateo threw himself in front of the child.

Claire fired twice toward the muzzle flashes, forcing several Falcon soldiers behind broken support columns.

The chamber disappeared beneath a haze of smoke and flashing emergency lights.

Gabriel pressed the pistol harder against Leo's back.

"Don't move."

Leo remained perfectly still.

His eyes never left Lily.

"I've spent two years trying to save my family."

"So have I," Gabriel replied quietly.

"You have a strange way of showing it."

Another explosion echoed somewhere above them.

The ground trembled.

Pieces of shattered concrete rolled across the floor.

The emergency sirens throughout Rossi Estate grew louder.

Elena pulled Beatrice through the collapsed tunnel.

"Hurry."

"I'm not leaving Lily!"

"You are saving her."

"I don't even know if I can trust you."

"You can't."

Beatrice stopped.

Elena turned.

"But right now," Elena continued, "I'm the only person who knows how to reach your mother."

Those words struck harder than any bullet.

"My mother..."

"She's alive."

"You've already lied."

"I've hidden the truth."

"That's the same thing."

"No."

Elena's voice remained calm.

"One is betrayal."

"The other is survival."

Another burst of gunfire erupted behind them.

Leo shouted Lily's name.

Mateo answered with covering fire.

Claire ordered everyone to move toward the eastern exit.

The tunnel narrowed.

Old electrical cables hung from the ceiling like dead vines.

Water dripped steadily from cracked concrete.

Beatrice noticed faded symbols painted on the walls.

Silver falcons.

Roman numerals.

And one familiar mark.

The same symbol Lily had drawn repeatedly months earlier without knowing what it meant.

She stopped walking.

"I've seen this."

Elena nodded.

"I know."

"Lily drew it."

"Because Sofia brought her here."

"When?"

"The night of the explosion."

Beatrice struggled to keep breathing.

"This tunnel..."

"...connects every original Falcon facility beneath Rossi Estate."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I expect you to remember."

Elena pointed toward the wall.

A child's handprint had been preserved beneath several layers of peeling paint.

Tiny.

No larger than Lily's.

Below it were six uneven letters.

L I L Y.

Beatrice stared silently.

"She really was here."

"Yes."

"She remembered."

"Children remember more than adults believe."

Behind them, another explosion shook the passage.

Dust filled the air.

Elena looked back.

"They're collapsing the archive."

"Antonio?"

"He never leaves evidence."

Meanwhile, inside the archive, Gabriel slowly lowered his weapon.

Leo frowned.

"What game are you playing?"

Gabriel tossed the Genesis drive across the floor.

Mateo caught it instinctively.

Claire immediately examined the blinking indicator.

"The countdown is still running."

Gabriel nodded.

"You have less than six minutes."

Leo stepped closer.

"You could have killed me."

"I still might."

"Then why didn't you?"

Gabriel looked toward Lily.

"Because Sofia made me promise one thing."

Silence filled the chamber.

Leo's expression hardened.

"You expect me to believe she trusted you?"

"No."

Gabriel smiled bitterly.

"She expected me to betray her."

"But she also knew I would regret it."

Lily suddenly looked up.

"I know you."

Everyone turned.

Gabriel stared at the little girl.

"You remember?"

"You cried."

The old man's face lost all color.

"You were outside my room."

Lily nodded slowly.

"You thought I was asleep."

"I wasn't."

"You said..."

Her small voice almost disappeared beneath the alarms.

"...you said you were sorry."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then he whispered,

"I was."

Claire exchanged a quick glance with Mateo.

Neither of them lowered their weapons.

Regret did not erase years of crimes.

But it changed everything about the man standing before them.

Back inside the tunnel, Elena stopped before an enormous steel door.

There were no handles.

Only two circular recesses.

One bore the Falcon symbol.

The other carried an unfamiliar crest.

A rose surrounded by intertwined branches.

"The Romano crest," Elena said.

Beatrice looked at it.

"I've never seen this before."

"Because your family erased it."

"My family?"

"To protect the last bloodline."

Elena reached into her pocket and removed a worn silver ring.

She pressed it into the first recess.

Nothing happened.

"It still needs you."

"I don't know what to do."

"You already do."

Beatrice hesitated.

Then she noticed a small scar across her right palm.

The same scar she had carried since childhood.

She slowly placed her hand against the second recess.

A faint mechanical sound echoed behind the wall.

Ancient gears began turning.

The steel door unlocked.

Cold air rushed from the darkness beyond.

Hidden lights gradually illuminated a vast underground corridor.

It looked nothing like the damaged Falcon tunnels.

Everything here was immaculate.

White marble floors.

Bronze statues.

Glass display cases.

Old photographs stretching into the distance.

"What is this place?"

Elena answered quietly.

"The Founder Archive."

Beatrice stepped inside.

Every photograph showed members of two families.

Rossi.

Romano.

Some dated back nearly a century.

Children.

Scientists.

Military officers.

Doctors.

Judges.

Every generation appeared connected.

Then Beatrice froze.

One photograph stood alone beneath protective glass.

Antonio Rossi.

A young woman Beatrice instantly recognized as her mother.

Another young woman identical to Sofia.

And Elena.

Four people.

One laboratory.

Across the bottom someone had handwritten:

PROJECT GENESIS — FIRST SURVIVING SUBJECTS.

Beatrice felt her knees weaken.

"No..."

Elena watched silently.

"This is impossible."

"I wish it were."

"They're children."

"Yes."

"They experimented on children."

"They created them."

Beatrice looked up sharply.

"What did you say?"

Before Elena could answer, the lights throughout the corridor flickered.

A calm male voice echoed from hidden speakers.

"Welcome home."

Beatrice's blood froze.

She recognized the voice immediately.

Antonio Rossi.

"I've waited a very long time for this moment."

Elena whispered,

"He's watching us."

Large monitors slowly descended from the ceiling.

Antonio appeared on every screen.

Older.

Calmer.

Perfectly composed.

He smiled as though greeting old friends.

"Leonardo is predictably late."

His eyes shifted toward Beatrice.

"But you..."

"...arrived exactly on time."

Beatrice glared at the screen.

"Where is my mother?"

Antonio chuckled softly.

"You always ask the wrong question."

"I asked where she is."

"And I heard you."

He folded his hands.

"The better question is..."

"...which one?"

Silence consumed the corridor.

Beatrice frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Antonio's smile widened.

"Your mother has worn more than one face."

Elena closed her eyes.

"No..."

Antonio looked toward her image through another hidden camera.

"I told you this day would come."

"You promised you would never involve her."

"I promised many things."

"You lied."

"I adapted."

The monitors suddenly switched.

New footage appeared.

A hospital room.

An unconscious woman connected to multiple machines.

Her face was partially hidden beneath oxygen tubing.

Beatrice moved closer.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Mom..."

The woman slowly opened her eyes.

She looked directly toward the camera.

Then whispered only two words.

"Don't come."

The transmission immediately cut to black.

"No!"

Beatrice struck the monitor.

The screen remained dark.

Antonio's voice returned.

"She still thinks sacrifice will save you."

"It won't."

"What have you done to her?"

"I've kept her alive."

"You imprisoned her."

"I preserved her."

Elena stepped forward.

"You monster."

Antonio ignored her.

Instead, he looked directly into the camera focused on Beatrice.

"You've spent your life believing you were chosen by chance."

"You weren't."

"You were born for Founder Protocol."

Beatrice shook her head.

"I'm nobody."

Antonio smiled sadly.

"No."

"You are the final authorization."

At that exact moment, the steel door behind them exploded inward.

Smoke poured into the Founder Archive.

Leo emerged first, covered in dust.

Mateo followed with Lily in his arms.

Claire secured the entrance while scanning every corner.

Leo immediately ran toward Beatrice.

"Are you hurt?"

She threw herself into his arms.

"No."

Lily rushed toward them.

Beatrice knelt and hugged the little girl tightly.

For one brief moment, everything else disappeared.

Then Antonio spoke again.

"Beautiful."

Everyone looked toward the monitors.

"This is precisely where I wanted all of you."

Claire raised her weapon at the cameras.

"Show yourself."

Antonio smiled.

"I already have."

A hidden wall behind the largest monitor began sliding open.

Heavy footsteps echoed through the chamber.

Everyone aimed their weapons.

The figure stepped into the light.

Leo's breathing stopped.

Mateo lowered his gun in disbelief.

Even Elena looked horrified.

Standing inside the doorway was a woman wearing a simple white dress.

She looked exactly like Sofia.

Not almost.

Exactly.

She raised her trembling hands.

Tears rolled down her face.

"Leo..."

Leo took one unsteady step forward.

"Sofia..."

Before anyone could move another inch, Elena screamed.

"Don't touch her!"

The woman's expression changed instantly.

Her tears vanished.

A slow, unnatural smile spread across her face.

She lifted a small remote control.

Antonio's voice echoed one final time through the speakers.

"Allow me to introduce..."

"...Prototype Zero."

May you like

The lights throughout the Founder Archive went black.
