CHAPTER 13 — PROTOTYPE ZERO

The darkness lasted less than three seconds.
It was enough.
A sharp electronic pulse tore through the Founder Archive.
Leo heard Lily cry out.
He reached toward the sound, but a violent force struck his shoulder and threw him against the marble floor.
The impact drove the air from his lungs.
Somewhere nearby, glass shattered.
Mateo shouted Claire’s name.
Then a woman began humming.
Softly.
Calmly.
It was Sofia’s lullaby.
Leo froze.
The melody moved through the darkness with perfect accuracy.
Every note.
Every pause.
Every breath.
It sounded exactly like his wife.
Then the emergency lights came on.
The woman in the white dress stood in the center of the chamber.
The remote remained in her right hand.
Her expression was empty now.
No tears.
No fear.
No recognition.
Only obedience.
Lily was kneeling several feet away, pressing both hands over her ears.
Beatrice rushed toward her.
“Lily!”
The woman turned.
Her eyes locked onto the child.
Elena stepped between them.
“Don’t let her finish the song.”
Leo forced himself upright.
“What did the remote do?”
Elena stared at the woman.
“It activated her.”
“Activated what?”
“Prototype Zero.”
“That tells me nothing.”
“It means she was built to imitate Sofia.”
The woman tilted her head.
Then she continued humming.
Lily’s silver falcon locket began flashing.
Once.
Twice.
Then in time with the melody.
Claire saw it first.
“The locket is responding.”
Mateo pulled the Genesis drive from his jacket.
The red countdown still glowed across its surface.
Four minutes and thirty-two seconds.
The percentage indicator began changing.
Eighty-one percent.
Eighty-two.
Eighty-three.
Mateo looked up.
“The missing files are transferring.”
Elena’s face tightened.
“That’s what Antonio wanted.”
Leo moved toward the woman.
She looked exactly like Sofia.
Every instinct inside him screamed to protect her.
Every memory told him to trust that face.
But Beatrice’s warning from the convoy echoed in his mind.
It isn’t Sofia.
Leo stopped several feet away.
“Who are you?”
The woman smiled.
“Sofia.”
“No.”
Her smile deepened.
“You came home late.”
Leo’s chest tightened.
That was what Sofia had said to him the night before the explosion.
A private sentence.
Spoken inside their bedroom.
No one else had been there.
“How do you know that?”
“You promised Lily a yellow bicycle.”
Leo’s face lost color.
“You promised me Venice.”
She took one step closer.
“You said you would stop working on Sundays.”
Another step.
“You broke every promise.”
Leo raised his weapon.
His hand trembled.
The woman looked at the gun.
Then whispered,
“You never pointed a weapon at me before.”
Lily began crying.
“Daddy, stop.”
Beatrice held her tightly.
“That isn’t your mother.”
“But she sounds like her.”
“I know.”
“She knows things.”
“I know.”
The woman’s eyes shifted toward Beatrice.
Her expression changed.
Hatred appeared.
“You.”
Beatrice remained still.
The woman walked toward her.
“You were always watching him.”
Leo stepped into her path.
“That’s enough.”
She ignored him.
“Sofia trusted you.”
Her voice became sharper.
“She let you into her home.”
“She let you near her daughter.”
“She let you take her place.”
Beatrice stared back.
“I never took anyone’s place.”
The woman suddenly lunged.
Leo caught her wrist before she reached Beatrice.
Her strength shocked him.
She twisted with unnatural speed and drove her elbow into his ribs.
Leo stumbled.
Mateo raised his gun.
“Don’t shoot!”
Elena’s command stopped him.
“She may contain Sofia’s memory architecture.”
Claire looked at her.
“Memory architecture?”
“Extracted neural patterns.”
Leo turned toward Elena.
“You said she imitates Sofia.”
“She does.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
“No.”
Elena’s voice dropped.
“It’s worse.”
The woman stood motionless again.
Her breathing was perfectly controlled.
Elena continued.
“Antonio spent years mapping Sofia’s memories.”
“Preferences.”
“Speech patterns.”
“Emotional responses.”
“Trauma.”
“Everything.”
Beatrice looked horrified.
“He copied her mind?”
“He copied fragments.”
Leo stared at the woman.
“So she remembers our life?”
“She remembers what Antonio gave her.”
The woman smiled at him.
“I remember enough.”
Mateo checked the drive again.
Eighty-six percent.
Three minutes and fifty seconds.
“The transfer is accelerating.”
Claire aimed at the remote.
“Destroy it.”
“No,” Elena said.
“If you break the signal now, the locket may interpret it as an attack.”
“What happens then?”
“Genesis releases everything.”
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“So either Antonio completes Founder Protocol or the entire Ledger goes public.”
“Yes.”
“Convenient.”
“It was designed that way.”
Beatrice looked at the ceiling cameras.
“He wants us to choose.”
Antonio’s voice returned through the speakers.
“Very good.”
Leo looked upward.
“Come down here.”
“I am already closer than you understand.”
“Stop hiding.”
“I stopped hiding twelve years ago.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“You needed grief.”
Leo’s jaw tightened.
“For what?”
“To become the man capable of inheriting Falcon.”
“I don’t want Falcon.”
“No son ever wants his father’s burden.”
“You are not my father.”
Silence followed.
Even the woman in white stopped humming.
Then Antonio laughed softly.
“At last.”
Leo looked toward the screen.
“You heard Elena.”
“I heard a frightened woman repeat a story she only partly understands.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
“I will.”
The largest monitor flickered.
A medical file appeared.
LEONARDO ROSSI.
PATERNAL MATCH: INCONCLUSIVE.
SECONDARY DONOR RECORD: SEALED.
Leo stared at the screen.
Antonio continued.
“You were born during the first Genesis trials.”
“Your mother believed you were mine.”
“She was wrong.”
Leo’s expression became colder.
“Who was he?”
“That answer is inside the missing nineteen percent.”
Mateo looked at the drive.
Eighty-eight percent.
Antonio’s voice softened.
“Complete the transfer.”
“Learn who you are.”
“And lose everything else,” Claire said.
Antonio ignored her.
The woman in white resumed the lullaby.
Lily gasped.
Her locket opened by itself.
Inside, a tiny blue light began pulsing.
Beatrice grabbed it.
The metal burned her fingers.
She pulled back.
“Lily, take it off.”
“I can’t.”
The chain had tightened around the child’s neck.
Leo rushed toward her.
The woman stepped into his path again.
This time, she spoke in Sofia’s exact voice.
“Touch her, and she dies.”
Leo stopped.
The countdown reached three minutes.
The Genesis drive climbed to ninety percent.
Then a new door opened at the far end of the archive.
A wheelchair rolled slowly into the light.
A woman sat restrained inside it.
Her hair was gray.
Her face was thin.
But Beatrice recognized her instantly.
Her mother lifted her head.
Her eyes found Beatrice.
Tears filled them.
“Run.”
A man stepped from the shadows behind the wheelchair.
He wore a black suit.
A falcon ring gleamed on his right hand.
Beatrice had seen him many times inside Rossi Global.
He had attended executive meetings.
He had spoken at charity galas.
He had stood beside Leo after Sofia’s funeral.
Mateo lowered his weapon in disbelief.
Claire whispered his name.
“Daniel Mercer.”
Leo stared at the longtime chief legal officer of Rossi Global.
Harold’s final warning returned at once.
There is another insider.
Daniel placed one hand on Beatrice’s mother’s shoulder.
Then smiled.
“Founder Protocol is ready.”
Beatrice could not breathe.
The woman in the wheelchair was thinner.
Older.
Her hair had turned almost completely gray.
But those eyes…
She had seen them every day of her childhood.
“Mom…”
The whisper escaped before she realized she had spoken.
The restrained woman lifted her trembling hands as far as the leather straps allowed.
“No…”
Her voice cracked.
“Don't come closer.”
Daniel Mercer smiled politely, as if he were welcoming guests into a board meeting instead of an underground prison.
“You finally found each other.”
Leo's eyes never left him.
“For twenty years, you sat beside me.”
Daniel adjusted his cufflinks.
“That was my assignment.”
“You attended Sofia's funeral.”
“Yes.”
“You comforted Lily.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to all of us.”
Daniel shrugged.
“I was never employed by Rossi Global.”
“I was placed there.”
Claire slowly shifted her aim toward Daniel's chest.
“So Harold was right.”
“There was another insider.”
Daniel nodded once.
“Harold became inconvenient.”
Mateo's jaw tightened.
“You ordered the sniper.”
“I approved it.”
Silence spread across the chamber.
Even the woman called Prototype Zero stopped humming for a moment.
The only sound came from the Genesis drive.
91%.
Antonio's calm voice echoed through the hidden speakers.
“Daniel has served faithfully for twenty-seven years.”
Leo answered without looking away from Daniel.
“You hid beside me while my family fell apart.”
“I protected the timetable.”
“You destroyed lives.”
“I preserved the future.”
“The future doesn't require children to suffer.”
Antonio laughed softly.
“That is why you never could have led Falcon.”
Beatrice stepped forward.
“Let my mother go.”
Daniel looked at her with genuine curiosity.
“You still call her your mother.”
“She is.”
“She raised you.”
“She loved me.”
“Yes.”
“That was… unexpected.”
Beatrice frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked toward the cameras.
“Antonio underestimated human attachment.”
Antonio did not answer.
Daniel continued.
“She was instructed to observe you.”
“She chose to become your mother instead.”
Beatrice felt tears sting her eyes.
“So everything was real?”
Daniel nodded.
“The bedtime stories.”
“The birthdays.”
“The scraped knees.”
“She loved you despite every order she received.”
The woman in the wheelchair closed her eyes.
A single tear rolled down her face.
“I'm sorry…”
Beatrice shook her head violently.
“No.”
“You don't apologize.”
“You came back.”
“I never left willingly.”
The Genesis drive emitted another sharp tone.
93%.
Claire checked her watch.
“We're running out of time.”
Elena looked toward Prototype Zero.
“No…”
“She isn't waiting anymore.”
Everyone turned.
Prototype Zero slowly reached for Lily.
Not with violence.
Almost gently.
Like a mother reaching for her child.
Lily instinctively stepped backward.
“I want my mommy.”
Prototype Zero hesitated.
Something changed in her expression.
Confusion.
Pain.
For a fraction of a second, the cold obedience disappeared.
She whispered,
“Lily…”
Not mechanically.
Not like a programmed response.
Like someone remembering.
Leo noticed it too.
“Elena…”
Elena stared without blinking.
“She shouldn't be able to do that.”
“What?”
“Remember on her own.”
Prototype Zero pressed both hands against her head.
Her breathing became uneven.
“No…”
Another voice escaped her lips.
Different.
Softer.
“Leo…”
The billionaire froze.
That voice…
It wasn't an imitation.
It carried the tiny imperfections only Sofia had ever had.
The slight catch before saying his name.
The gentle tremor whenever she was frightened.
Prototype Zero suddenly screamed.
The sound echoed through the entire archive.
She dropped to her knees.
Blood began running from her nose.
Antonio's voice became sharper.
“Stabilize her.”
Daniel immediately pulled a small injector from his jacket.
Claire fired.
The bullet shattered the injector before it reached Prototype Zero.
Glass exploded across the marble floor.
Daniel's calm expression disappeared for the first time.
“You've made a mistake.”
Claire answered,
“No.”
“You just lost your control.”
Prototype Zero looked around wildly.
Her eyes landed on Leo.
Recognition spread across her face.
Real recognition.
She whispered one sentence.
“They're beneath the lake…”
Elena gasped.
“No…”
Prototype Zero looked toward Beatrice.
“Protect Lily.”
Then she grabbed her own head with both hands.
“I can't stop him…”
Antonio's voice thundered through the speakers.
“Enough!”
Every monitor in the chamber flashed red.
Hidden mechanisms began moving behind the walls.
Heavy steel doors started sliding shut.
Mateo looked around.
“He's sealing the archive.”
The countdown continued.
95%.
Lily suddenly cried out.
The silver falcon locket opened completely.
A thin beam of blue light projected onto the polished floor.
Instead of random symbols, a three-dimensional map slowly appeared.
An underground network.
Dozens of tunnels.
Secret facilities.
Escape routes.
One location pulsed brighter than all the others.
Elena stared in disbelief.
“The Sanctuary…”
Claire looked at her.
“What is that?”
“The place Sofia built before Falcon found her.”
“Is she there?”
“I don't know.”
“But…”
Elena stepped closer to the holographic map.
“…that's where Resistance Protocol began.”
Daniel lunged toward Lily.
“You don't understand!”
Leo intercepted him with a brutal punch.
Daniel crashed into a marble column.
For the first time in decades, the polished attorney looked like an ordinary man.
He wiped blood from his mouth.
“You're too late.”
Mateo checked the drive.
97%.
Claire shouted,
“We need to leave now!”
Antonio spoke again.
“No.”
“You need to decide.”
The holographic map suddenly split into two routes.
One path flashed blue.
The other glowed crimson.
Elena's face turned pale.
“Oh God…”
“What?” Leo demanded.
“The blue route leads to Sofia.”
“And the red?”
Elena slowly looked at Beatrice.
“The red route leads to Founder Protocol.”
“Which one saves Lily?”
Elena didn't answer.
Claire understood first.
“There isn't one.”
Elena lowered her head.
“If we rescue Sofia…”
“…Founder Protocol activates.”
“And if we stop Founder Protocol…”
Beatrice finished the sentence herself.
“…we may never find Sofia again.”
Silence filled the archive.
The Genesis drive reached 99%.
Then the hologram flickered.
A new face appeared above the map.
An elderly woman with silver hair.
She looked directly at Lily.
Then she smiled.
“My brave little falcon…”
Lily's eyes widened.
“I know her.”
Leo knelt beside his daughter.
“Who is she?”
The child pointed at the hologram with trembling fingers.
“She sang with Mommy…”
“She called me…”
“…Genesis.”
Every adult in the chamber froze.
Even Antonio stopped speaking.
The drive emitted one final tone.
100%.
Then, instead of shutting down, a message appeared across its screen.
FOUNDER PROTOCOL REJECTED.
SECONDARY AUTHORITY DETECTED.
Before anyone could understand what it meant, every light inside the Founder Archive went dark again.
A slow, deliberate applause echoed from somewhere beyond the sealed steel doors.
One pair of hands.
Then another.
Then dozens more.
Someone outside the chamber spoke in a calm, unfamiliar voice.
“At last…”
May you like
“…both bloodlines have arrived.”
