CHAPTER 11 — THE DAUGHTER WHO NEVER EXISTED

The woman’s smile never reached her eyes.

Behind her, twelve Falcon soldiers formed a perfect semicircle across the ruined entrance to the underground archive.

Their rifles remained lowered.

That made them more dangerous.

Men preparing to kill often pointed their weapons.

Men certain of obedience did not need to.

Beatrice stared at the woman standing beneath the emergency lights.

The resemblance to Sofia was almost flawless.

The same dark hair.

The same sharp cheekbones.

The same pale olive skin.

Even the small crease beside her mouth looked familiar.

But Sofia’s face had always carried warmth, even when she was afraid.

This woman’s face carried calculation.

Beatrice took one slow step in front of Lily.

“You’re lying.”

The woman tilted her head.

“About being Sofia’s sister?”

“About everything.”

Leo moved beside Beatrice, shielding Lily with his body.

His eyes never left the stranger.

“Give me your name.”

The woman looked at him as though she had been waiting years to hear him ask.

“My name is Elena Romano.”

Beatrice stopped breathing.

The name struck harder than the explosion that had destroyed the archive.

Romano.

Her mother’s family name.

Her own real name.

Mateo glanced at Beatrice.

Claire’s expression changed almost imperceptibly.

Gabriel, still collapsed against the wall, began laughing weakly.

Blood darkened the front of his shirt.

“Elena,” he whispered.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Elena looked down at him.

“You first.”

One of the Falcon soldiers stepped toward Gabriel.

Leo raised his gun.

The entire semicircle of soldiers reacted at once.

Rifles lifted.

Laser sights appeared across Leo’s chest.

Mateo aimed at Elena.

Claire moved behind a broken concrete column and raised her weapon toward the soldiers on the left.

The ruined archive became perfectly still.

Lily’s fingers tightened around Beatrice’s hand.

Beatrice could feel the child trembling.

Elena noticed.

Her expression softened for less than a second.

“Lily.”

Leo’s voice became lethal.

“Do not say her name.”

Elena ignored him.

“You look exactly as Sofia described you.”

Lily pressed her face against Beatrice’s coat.

Elena’s eyes remained fixed on her.

“She said you would remember me.”

Lily slowly looked up.

“I don’t.”

Something flickered in Elena’s face.

Pain.

Or disappointment.

Then it vanished.

“You were very young.”

“I remember people who were kind to me.”

A faint sound escaped Mateo.

It might have been a breath.

It might have been approval.

Elena smiled again.

“Sofia said you were unusually perceptive.”

Lily looked toward Gabriel’s bleeding body.

“He is dying.”

Gabriel lifted his head.

“Not yet, little bird.”

Elena’s smile disappeared.

“Take him.”

Two soldiers advanced.

Mateo adjusted his aim.

“No one moves.”

Elena raised one hand.

The soldiers stopped instantly.

She studied Mateo.

“Mateo Calder.”

Mateo’s eyes hardened.

“You know me.”

“I know everyone who matters.”

“Then you know I’ll shoot you before they reach him.”

“No, you won’t.”

Elena looked toward the silver drive clipped inside his jacket.

“You have eighty-one percent of the Genesis Ledger.”

Mateo’s hand instinctively moved closer to it.

Elena noticed that too.

“The remaining nineteen percent is not in the archive.”

Claire stepped slightly out from behind the column.

“Where is it?”

Elena finally looked at her.

“Special Agent Claire Voss.”

Claire kept her weapon steady.

“You say that like we’ve met.”

“We have.”

Claire’s face remained controlled.

But Beatrice saw the smallest tightening in her jaw.

Elena continued.

“You were unconscious.”

“When?”

“Berlin.”

Claire’s eyes changed.

Three years earlier, the Berlin extraction had destroyed an entire federal task force.

Only Claire had survived.

The official report blamed an internal communications failure.

Claire had never accepted it.

“You were there,” Claire said.

“I pulled you from the building.”

“You expect me to thank you?”

“No.”

Elena glanced at the Falcon soldiers.

“I expect you to understand that if Antonio wanted you dead, you would not be standing here.”

Leo stepped forward.

“Where is my wife?”

Elena’s attention returned to him.

“You still call her that.”

The words carried a strange edge.

Not jealousy.

Resentment.

Leo’s gun remained pointed at her heart.

“She is my wife.”

“Even after Gabriel told you who she is?”

Gabriel coughed.

Blood touched his lips.

“Careful, Elena.”

She looked down at him.

“You have spent your entire life turning truth into poison.”

“And you spent yours pretending Antonio loved you.”

For the first time, Elena’s composure cracked.

Only slightly.

But everyone saw it.

A soldier moved toward Gabriel again.

Elena stopped him with a glance.

Leo’s voice cut through the silence.

“Gabriel claimed Sofia is Antonio’s secret daughter.”

Elena said nothing.

“Is it true?”

Beatrice watched her closely.

Elena had arrived prepared for weapons.

She had prepared for accusations.

But she had not prepared for that question.

Leo saw it too.

“Answer me.”

Elena looked at him.

“Sofia is Antonio’s daughter.”

Beatrice’s stomach twisted.

Leo’s face became unreadable.

Lily looked from Leo to Elena, confused.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Claire lowered her weapon by half an inch.

Mateo whispered a curse.

Elena continued before anyone could speak.

“But she is not your sister.”

Leo’s gaze sharpened.

“You had better explain that very carefully.”

“Antonio Rossi is not your biological father.”

The words moved through the destroyed chamber like a silent shockwave.

Leo did not react.

Not at first.

His expression remained frozen.

Then his fingers tightened around the gun.

Gabriel began laughing again.

This time, the sound was broken and wet.

“There it is.”

Leo looked down at him.

“You knew.”

Gabriel’s laughter stopped.

“I suspected.”

“You knew enough to let me marry her.”

“You loved her.”

“That is not an answer.”

Gabriel coughed violently.

“The Circle altered bloodlines for generations.”

Leo stepped toward him.

Mateo moved quickly between them.

“Leo.”

“Move.”

“He is the only one here who may know where Sofia is.”

Leo’s eyes remained on Gabriel.

For one terrible second, Beatrice believed he would shoot through Mateo to reach him.

Then Lily spoke.

“Daddy.”

Leo froze.

The single word pulled him back.

He turned toward his daughter.

Lily’s eyes were full of fear.

Not fear of the soldiers.

Fear of him.

Leo slowly lowered his weapon.

“I’m all right.”

Lily did not answer.

Beatrice knelt beside her.

Elena watched them with an expression Beatrice could not understand.

“You care for her,” Elena said.

Beatrice rose.

“I love her.”

“That was not your assignment.”

Beatrice’s blood turned cold.

“What assignment?”

Elena looked almost surprised.

“You truly don’t know.”

“Know what?”

“Why you were placed inside Rossi Estate.”

“I was hired as a housekeeper.”

“No.”

Elena took one slow step forward.

Every weapon in the chamber followed her.

“You were selected.”

Beatrice felt the ruined floor tilt beneath her.

“By whom?”

“Your mother.”

Beatrice’s voice barely emerged.

“My mother is dead.”

Elena’s eyes softened again.

“No.”

The answer came without hesitation.

Beatrice shook her head.

“I saw her body.”

“You saw a body.”

“I identified her.”

“You identified her jewelry, her clothing, and a face damaged beyond recognition.”

Beatrice remembered the hospital basement.

The sealed bag.

The silver bracelet.

The nurse who would not meet her eyes.

The official who insisted the coffin remain closed.

For years, she had forced herself not to remember the smell of antiseptic.

Now every detail returned at once.

“My mother died in a train accident.”

“There was no accident.”

Beatrice’s knees nearly gave way.

Leo moved closer to her.

Elena continued.

“Your mother discovered what Falcon Project had become.”

“She tried to expose Antonio?”

“She tried to stop him.”

“Where is she?”

Elena looked toward the collapsed tunnel behind them.

“Closer than you think.”

An electronic pulse sounded from Mateo’s jacket.

Everyone turned.

The Genesis drive began flashing red.

Once.

Twice.

Then rapidly.

Mateo pulled it free.

“The tracker.”

Claire moved toward him.

“No.”

She examined the flashing pattern.

“That isn’t a tracker signal.”

Elena watched them calmly.

“It’s a countdown.”

Mateo looked up.

“To what?”

“Founder Protocol.”

Claire’s face lost color.

“You said Antonio was preparing it.”

“He was.”

Elena glanced at Lily.

“Now he has activated the first stage.”

A deep mechanical vibration moved beneath the floor.

Dust fell from the cracked ceiling.

Far above them, somewhere inside Rossi Estate, alarms began to scream.

Leo’s phone vibrated.

Then Mateo’s.

Then Claire’s.

Three separate screens lit at once.

Leo looked down.

A security alert covered the display.

ROSSI GLOBAL — EXECUTIVE LOCKDOWN.

Mateo’s phone showed another warning.

NATIONAL GRID INTERRUPTION DETECTED.

Claire’s device displayed a federal emergency notification.

MULTIPLE SECURE NETWORKS COMPROMISED.

The fluorescent lights flickered.

Lily covered her ears.

“What is happening?”

Elena answered quietly.

“Antonio is waking them.”

Claire stared at her.

“The sleepers?”

“Not all of them.”

“How many?”

Elena looked at the countdown on the Genesis drive.

“Stage One activates Custodians embedded in corporate, medical, and government systems.”

Mateo read the numbers aloud.

“Eight minutes.”

Elena nodded.

“In eight minutes, every active Custodian receives a single command.”

Leo’s eyes narrowed.

“What command?”

“To erase the Genesis Ledger.”

Mateo held up the drive.

“They cannot erase a disconnected device.”

“They do not need to.”

Elena pointed at Lily’s silver falcon locket.

“The drive is only a copy.”

Everyone looked at Lily.

The child clutched the locket against her chest.

“The true Ledger is still linked to her biometric pattern.”

Beatrice moved directly in front of Lily.

“You are not touching her.”

Elena’s voice became urgent.

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

“If the command reaches her locket, the Ledger will defend itself.”

Claire’s expression sharpened.

“What does that mean?”

Elena glanced at Gabriel.

He had become very still.

Too still.

“It means Sofia built a final failsafe.”

Gabriel opened his eyes.

Fear appeared in them for the first time.

“She wouldn’t.”

Elena looked down at him.

“She did.”

Leo grabbed Elena by the front of her coat and pulled her close.

“What did my wife build?”

Elena did not resist.

“If Falcon attempts to erase Genesis, the Ledger releases every file simultaneously.”

Claire took a sharp breath.

“Publicly?”

“Everywhere.”

Mateo looked toward the ceiling as the distant alarms grew louder.

“Names, accounts, medical records, sleeper identities.”

“Yes.”

“That would collapse governments.”

“Yes.”

“It could expose protected witnesses, intelligence assets, and children used in the experiments.”

“Yes.”

Leo tightened his grip.

“And Antonio activated it anyway?”

“He believes he can redirect the release.”

“How?”

Elena’s gaze shifted toward Beatrice.

“Founder Protocol requires both bloodlines.”

Rossi.

Romano.

Beatrice remembered Antonio’s demand.

Bring Lily.

Bring Beatrice.

Bring the Genesis drive.

Come alone.

Elena continued.

“Lily carries the resistant Rossi sequence through Sofia.”

“And me?” Beatrice asked.

“You carry the Romano override.”

“What override?”

“The authority to choose where Genesis opens.”

Beatrice shook her head.

“I don’t understand.”

“You were never meant to.”

Elena reached slowly inside her coat.

Mateo aimed at her head.

“Stop.”

“I’m taking out a photograph.”

“Use two fingers.”

Elena obeyed.

She pulled out an old photograph and dropped it onto the ground.

The image landed face up.

Beatrice looked down.

Her mother stood inside a white laboratory.

She was younger.

Terrified.

Beside her stood Sofia.

Sofia appeared no older than sixteen.

Antonio stood behind them.

And in the far corner was another young woman with Sofia’s face.

Elena.

Beatrice stared at the photograph.

Written across the bottom in her mother’s handwriting were six words.

THE SISTERS ARE NOT THE SAME CHILD.

Beatrice looked up.

“What does this mean?”

Elena’s eyes shone beneath the emergency lights.

“Sofia and I were not born.”

A new sound echoed through the chamber.

A soft click.

Then another.

Falcon soldiers began lowering their rifles.

Not toward Leo.

Not toward Mateo.

Toward Elena.

Elena’s face tightened.

She turned slowly.

The soldier closest to her touched two fingers to the black falcon emblem on his collar.

“Stage One confirmed.”

Elena whispered, “No.”

The soldier looked at Lily.

“Founder command received.”

All twelve weapons shifted toward the six-year-old child.

Leo fired first.

The chamber exploded into movement.

Mateo dragged Lily behind the concrete column.

Claire shot the emergency lights.

Darkness swallowed the archive.

Gunfire tore through the blackness.

Beatrice felt someone seize her wrist.

She struck blindly.

A familiar voice whispered beside her ear.

“Don’t fight me.”

It was Elena.

She pulled Beatrice through the smoke toward the collapsed tunnel.

“Where are you taking me?”

“To your mother.”

Behind them, Leo shouted Lily’s name.

A red emergency light flashed once.

In that brief glow, Beatrice saw Gabriel standing upright.

He was no longer collapsing.

He was no longer helpless.

He held the Genesis drive in one blood-covered hand.

And a gun against Leo’s back in the other.

Gabriel smiled.

May you like

Then the countdown reached seven minutes.
