Chapter 5: The Experiment

Sarah’s recorded voice filled the room.

“Eight years ago, while I was pregnant, I discovered an illegal clinical trial hidden inside my father’s company.”

Michael listened without moving.

“The company tested an experimental gene therapy on pregnant women without proper consent. The treatment was designed to eliminate hereditary heart disease before birth.”

Laura paused the video.

“Emily has a cardiac condition?”

Michael nodded slowly.

“She showed abnormal electrical activity, but her heart structure is unusually strong.”

The video continued.

“My father believed the therapy worked. But several babies died. Others developed rare mutations. Records were falsified, families were paid off, and the trial was buried.”

Thomas whispered, “Dear God.”

Sarah’s face tightened on the screen.

“I was unknowingly given the treatment during my pregnancy. Emily survived. Her blood carries the only stable genetic response from the entire trial.”

Michael looked toward the ICU.

“They want to study her.”

“No,” Laura said. “They want to erase the evidence.”

Sarah continued.

“Julian discovered I had copied the trial records. He has spent years looking for them. I hid everything where only Michael would think to search.”

The recording ended.

Michael replayed the final sentence.

“Where only I would think to search.”

Thomas looked confused.

“What place would that be?”

Michael remembered Sarah from medical school.

The library where they studied.

The old farmhouse.

The lake where he proposed before their lives fell apart.

Then he remembered something else.

Sarah used to hide notes in anatomy textbooks.

“She may have hidden it in a book.”

Laura stood.

“Which one?”

Michael’s phone rang.

The ICU.

He answered immediately.

“Dr. Carter?”

A nurse sounded panicked.

“Emily is gone.”

Michael ran.

Her room was empty.

The IV line had been cut.

A nurse lay unconscious near the supply closet.

Thomas stared at the empty bed.

“No.”

Laura examined the broken door lock.

“Someone used an internal security code.”

Michael’s blood turned cold.

Only hospital staff should have access.

A phone on the bedside table began ringing.

Michael answered.

A man’s voice spoke calmly.

“Dr. Carter, my name is Julian Bennett.”

Michael’s hand tightened.

“Where is my daughter?”

“She is safe for the moment.”

“If you hurt her—”

“You misunderstand. I am trying to protect my company from a reckless dead woman.”

Michael’s voice dropped.

“She was your sister.”

“She was a liability.”

Thomas lunged for the phone, but Michael held him back.

Julian continued.

“Bring me Sarah’s files by midnight. Come alone.”

“I don’t have them.”

“Then find them.”

A faint sound came through the line.

Emily crying.

“Dad?”

Michael froze.

It was the first time she had called him that.

Julian spoke again.

“Midnight, Doctor. Or your daughter becomes another unfortunate outcome of an experimental treatment.”

The line went dead.

Michael stared at the phone.

Thomas grabbed his shoulder.

“We’ll find her.”

Michael turned with a look Thomas had never seen before.

Not fear.

Not grief.

May you like

War.

“No,” Michael said. “We’re going to destroy them.”
