Chapter 2: The Daughter He Never Knew

Michael ordered a full cardiac panel, blood work, toxicology screening, and emergency imaging.

He did not look at Thomas again until Emily had been stabilized.

When the nurses finally wheeled her toward intensive care, Michael followed them to the doors.

He watched until she disappeared.

Then he turned.

“Explain.”

Thomas seemed to age another ten years beneath the fluorescent lights.

“Not here.”

Michael grabbed his arm.

“You walked into my hospital with a dying child and told me she was my daughter. You will explain it here.”

Thomas looked around at the nurses pretending not to listen.

“Her mother’s name was Sarah Bennett.”

The name hit Michael harder than any blow.

Sarah.

The woman he had loved before medical school consumed his life.

The woman who vanished without saying goodbye.

Michael’s anger shifted into confusion.

“Sarah left me.”

“No,” Thomas said. “She tried to find you.”

Michael released his father.

“What?”

“She came to the farm eight years ago. She was pregnant.”

Michael stared at him.

“You met her?”

Thomas nodded.

“She said you had stopped answering her calls. She believed you wanted nothing to do with her.”

“I never received any calls.”

“I know that now.”

Michael stepped closer.

“What did you tell her?”

Thomas’s silence was answer enough.

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“What did you tell her?”

“I told her to leave you alone.”

The words landed like a gunshot.

Thomas continued, voice breaking.

“You had just been accepted into the surgical residency. You were finally escaping everything we had struggled through. I thought a child would ruin your future.”

“You had no right.”

“I know.”

“You sent away the woman I loved while she was carrying my daughter?”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Michael shoved him against the wall.

“You destroyed my life.”

A security guard moved toward them, but Nurse Ramirez raised a hand.

Thomas did not resist.

“You’re right,” he whispered.

Michael’s fists trembled.

“Where is Sarah now?”

Thomas’s eyes filled with tears.

“She died three months ago.”

Michael stepped back.

The rage drained from his face.

“How?”

“Car accident.”

Michael looked toward the intensive care unit.

“And Emily?”

“She had nowhere else to go. Sarah listed me as the emergency guardian.”

“Why not me?”

“Because she believed you rejected her.”

Michael’s eyes burned.

“You let her believe that for eight years.”

Thomas lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Before Michael could answer, the ICU doors opened.

A pediatric cardiologist hurried toward them.

“Dr. Carter, we found something unusual.”

Michael straightened.

“What?”

“Emily’s blood contains a rare anticoagulant. It is not prescribed to her, and the dosage is high enough to cause internal bleeding.”

Thomas went pale.

Michael’s gaze sharpened.

“Are you saying she was poisoned?”

The cardiologist hesitated.

“I’m saying this did not happen naturally.”

Michael looked at Thomas.

His father’s expression had changed.

Not guilt this time.

Fear.

“What aren’t you telling me?” Michael demanded.

Thomas whispered, “Sarah’s death may not have been an accident.”
