Chapter 1: The Name He Had Buried

“Get her into Trauma Two. Now.”

Dr. Michael Carter’s voice cut through the frozen hallway.

The nurses moved instantly.

The little girl was lifted from her grandfather’s arms and placed on the stretcher. Her pale fingers remained tangled in the old man’s sleeve until a nurse gently pulled them free.

“Grandpa
”

“I’m right here, sweetheart,” the old man whispered. “I’m not leaving.”

Michael stared at him.

Thomas Carter.

His father.

The man Michael had not seen in twenty-four years.

The man he had blamed for everything.

“Doctor?” Nurse Ramirez called. “Her oxygen saturation is falling.”

Michael forced himself to turn away.

Whatever questions waited between him and his father would have to wait.

The child might not have minutes.

Inside Trauma Two, Michael pressed a stethoscope to her chest.

“Severe wheezing. Weak pulse. Prepare epinephrine. Start oxygen.”

“What happened before she collapsed?” he asked.

Thomas stood near the wall, shaking.

“She had a fever for two days. Then she said her chest hurt. This morning, she couldn’t breathe.”

“Any known allergies?”

“I don’t know.”

Michael looked sharply at him.

“You’re her grandfather.”

Thomas’s eyes filled with shame.

“I only met her three months ago.”

Michael stopped.

Before he could ask what that meant, the monitor screamed.

The girl’s heart rhythm became dangerously unstable.

“Ventricular tachycardia,” Nurse Ramirez said.

“Charge to fifty joules.”

Michael placed the pads against the girl’s tiny chest.

“Clear.”

Her body jerked.

The rhythm continued.

“Charge again.”

Thomas covered his mouth.

Michael shocked her a second time.

The monitor flickered.

Then the rhythm steadied.

Everyone exhaled.

Michael leaned closer to the child.

“What’s her name?”

Thomas swallowed.

“Emily.”

Michael brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

That was when he saw it.

A small crescent-shaped birthmark behind her left ear.

His hands went still.

Michael had the same mark.

So had his mother.

He turned slowly toward Thomas.

“Who is this child?”

Thomas looked at the floor.

“Her name is Emily Carter.”

Michael’s face hardened.

“Carter?”

Thomas finally raised his eyes.

“Michael
 she is your daughter.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Michael stared at the unconscious girl.

Then back at the father he had not seen in decades.

“You’re lying.”

Thomas shook his head.

“I wish I were.”

Behind them, the monitor began beeping faster again.

May you like

And Michael realized the child lying before him was not only fighting for her life.

She was carrying a truth someone had hidden from him for eight years.
