Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush

Twelve hours later, the glass-and-steel monolith of Vance Global Headquarters pierced the Manhattan morning fog.
The emergency shareholder summit had been convened on the eighty-fifth floor. Word had already leaked across Wall Street that the Sterling-Vance engagement was shattered, sending Vance Global stock plunging eight percent at the opening bell. The board of directors—comprising some of the most ruthless private equity barons in the country—sat around the fifty-foot quartz conference table, murmuring in hostile, tense whispers.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling, looking impeccably composed despite the disaster in Geneva the night before.
"Alexander has lost his mind," Arthur announced to the room, leaning forward with an air of absolute authority. "He assaulted his own brother last night, illegally detained my daughter, and attempted to disrupt our family’s legitimate trust integration in Switzerland. His grief over Eleanor has turned into paranoid psychosis. Under Section 4 of our corporate bylaws, I move for an immediate vote of no-confidence to strip Alexander Vance of the Chairman and CEO titles."
"Seconded," called out Richard Hayes, a veteran board member firmly in Sterling's pocket.
"The motion is moved," Arthur smiled, a predator closing in for the kill. "All in favor of removing Alexander Vance—"
CLACK.
The heavy double frosted-glass doors of the boardroom swung open.
Every head at the table turned.
Walking through the doors was Alexander Vance, clad in an immaculate midnight-navy three-piece suit, projecting an aura of pure, crushing dominance. But he didn't walk in alone.
Beside him walked Clara.
She was no longer wearing the stained maid uniform or the torn collar. She wore a tailored ivory silk blazer, her dark hair swept back in an elegant updo, revealing the sharp, noble contours of her face. Around her neck, gleaming under the bright LED lights, hung the restored silver locket.
The entire boardroom fell dead silent. Several older board members who had served during Eleanor's era stood up from their chairs in complete shock.
"Eleanor...?" one of the elderly directors gasped, stumbling back. "Good god, it's like looking at a ghost."
Arthur Sterling’s smug grin vanished instantly, replaced by a twitch of pure, unadulterated fury. "What is the meaning of this circus, Alexander? Bringing your domestic staff into a closed executive meeting is a direct breach of corporate protocol!"
"She's not staff, Arthur," Alexander said, his voice ringing with absolute clarity as he pulled out the center chair at the head of the table and held it open for Clara.
Clara sat down, placing her hands flat on the polished quartz surface. She looked directly into the eyes of the man who had ordered the murder of her mother.
Alexander stood behind her, resting both hands on the back of her chair. "Gentlemen of the board, allow me to introduce the majority shareholder of Vance Global Holdings. Aria Eleanor Montgomery. The legal owner of forty-five percent of this company's voting stock."
"That's absurd!" Arthur barked, slamming his legal dossier down. "Aria Montgomery died twelve years ago in Chicago! This is an imposter hired by Alexander to stage a hostile takeover!"
"Is that so?" Clara spoke for the first time.
Her voice was calm, clear, and cut through the room like a scalpel. She pulled a sealed manila envelope from her jacket and slid it across the table directly into Arthur's chest.
"That envelope contains the certified results from the Federal Biometric Database and the Swiss Federal Department of Justice, signed two hours ago at JFK International Airport," Clara said, leaning forward. "My DNA is a 99.98% direct match to Eleanor Vance. And more importantly, Mr. Sterling..."
Clara pulled out a small black flash drive and placed it next to the envelope.
"...it contains the complete recording from the Geneva vault security feed last night, where you explicitly attempted to access my trust using an illegal autopsy blood sample stolen from the Cook County morgue."
Arthur’s face turned an ugly shade of gray.
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Directors began shouting, demanding answers, while Richard Hayes quietly gathered his papers and tried to slip toward the exit.
"Nobody leaves," Alexander’s voice cut through the noise like a whip.
Two federal marshals in plain clothes stepped into the boardroom doorway, badges gleaming at their belts.
"Arthur Sterling," the lead marshal announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and federal grand larceny. Step away from the table."
Arthur looked around frantically, but not a single director met his gaze. His empire had crumbled in less than five minutes. As the marshals locked the cuffs around his wrists and began leading him away, Arthur stopped beside Clara's chair.

"You think you've won, little girl?" Arthur snarled, his eyes bulging with venom. "Your mother died screaming in that basement, and you'll never see a dime of that money. Victoria has the third key. You will never open the primary vault without her!"
Clara looked Arthur straight in the eye without blinking. "Victoria doesn't have the third key anymore, Arthur."
