Chapter 10 - Bloodlines and Betrayals

"You insolent little brat," Helena hissed, slamming her crystal glass against the table so hard it shattered, amber liquid pooling across the polished wood. "You think you can dismantle my family with a dead woman’s diary?!"
"It's not just a diary, Helena," Alexander interjected, his voice dropping to a deadly pitch. "It's the forensic blueprint of how you paid the arson investigators twelve years ago. We found the original wire slips in Jonathan Hayes’s private vault."
Helena’s face drained of color. The five European financiers at the table scrambled to their feet, grabbing their leather portfolios and fleeing through the side exit without a backward glance. The Sterling name had become radioactive in less than two minutes.
Outside, the steady chop of heavy helicopter blades shook the chalet's foundations.
Swiss Federal Police officers in dark tactical gear poured through the shattered terrace doors, weapons drawn. The lead magistrate stepped forward, flashing a federal arrest warrant stamped with the Swiss red cross.
"Helena Sterling," the magistrate announced in crisp, formal German and English. "You are under arrest by order of the Federal Criminal Court of Bellinzona for transnational corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering."
As the officers moved to secure the elderly matriarch, Helena suddenly let out a dry, rattling laugh. Her eyes locked onto Alexander, filled with spiteful glee.
"You think you've won, Alex?" Helena sneered as the handcuffs clicked around her frail wrists. "You think Eleanor was the only one who kept secrets?"
Alexander paused, his eyes narrowing. "What are you talking about?"
"Ask him about your father's will, girl," Helena spat, glaring at Clara. "Ask Alexander why your mother was desperate to leave New York twelve years ago. She wasn't running from us... she was running from him."
Clara glanced at Alexander. For a fraction of a second, she saw a shadow of deep, ancient pain pass across his features before his iron mask locked back into place.
"Take her away," Alexander commanded the Swiss officers.
The chalet fell quiet once more, save for the howling alpine wind rushing through the broken terrace doors. Clara stood amidst the wreckage, looking at her uncle with a furrowed brow.
"Alexander," Clara said softly, the silence stretching between them like a taut wire. "What did she mean? Why was my mother trying to leave New York?"
Alexander walked over to the terrace edge, staring out over the dark waters of Lake Zurich. When he turned back, his face looked older, worn down by years of carrying ghosts.
"Because my father was a tyrant," Alexander confessed, his voice barely audible above the wind. "Our father wanted to use Eleanor's logistics code for military contracts. Eleanor refused. When she threatened to take you and disappear to Europe, our father disowned her and rewrote his will on his deathbed to leave everything to me."
"And what did you do?" Clara asked, her pulse quickening.
"I tried to bridge the gap," Alexander said, his fists clenching at his sides. "I told Eleanor I would sign over the entire company to her if she just stayed in New York where I could protect her. But Arthur Sterling and Julian used that friction to convince my father's old board that Eleanor was going rogue. They struck before I could finalize the transfer."
He looked directly into Clara's eyes, entirely vulnerable. "I didn't kill her, Aria. But my failure to act faster is the reason you grew up an orphan."
Clara walked across the room and stopped in front of him. She reached out, taking his large, calloused hand in hers.
"You didn't fail me today," she said gently. "And you didn't fail her."

Before Alexander could reply, Marcus’s radio chirped with a priority encrypted frequency from New York.
"Mr. Vance," Marcus said, stepping forward with the handset. "It's the Manhattan District Attorney. Julian Vance has broken his silence in the holding cells. He wants to cut a deal... and he claims there's an active bomb planted inside the Vance Global server farm in New Jersey."
