Chapter 3 - The Shadow on the Balcony

Alexander didn't shout. He didn't issue a frantic command across the ballroom. The cold fury inside him simply solidified into something lethal.
"Marcus," Alexander spoke into the encrypted receiver, his voice flat and low. "Cut the power to the east wing. Lock down the garage bay. If Julian makes it past the perimeter wall, you lose your badge and your severance."
"Already on it, sir," Marcus answered.
Clara stood beside Alexander, shivering despite the thick wool of his designer overcoat draping over her frame. She looked up at the towering man whose name she had only ever whispered in fear during staff briefings. The billionaire CEO wasn't looking at the crowd of terrified socialites anymore; his eyes were pinned to the shadowy upper mezzanine where heavy velvet curtains still swayed from someone’s hurried escape.
"Mr. Vance..." Clara began, her voice cracking under the weight of sheer exhaustion. "Who is Aria? What are you talking about?"
Alexander turned back to her. The razor-sharp edge in his gaze melted into something deeply vulnerable, a look entirely foreign on a face sculpted by corporate takeovers and bitter betrayals.
"You don't remember, do you?" he asked gently.
"I remember smoke," she whispered, her fingers clutching the silver locket against her chest like an anchor. "I remember sirens. And someone pushing me through a low basement window into a pile of wet leaves before everything exploded. I spent ten years in group homes after that."
A muscle in Alexander's jaw ticked. "That was your mother who pushed you through that window. My sister, Eleanor. She died making sure you survived."
Before Clara could process the revelation, the entire mansion plunged into pitch-black darkness as Marcus cut the main grid.
Gasps and high-pitched screams erupted through the grand ballroom. Guests bumped into champagne towers, glass shattering in every direction. Red emergency backup lights flickered to life seconds later, casting long, bloody shadows across the marble floors.
BANG.
A gunshot echoed from the second-floor library.
"Stay behind me," Alexander commanded, grabbing Clara's wrist with an iron yet careful grip and pulling her toward the reinforced service corridor behind the grand staircase.
"Is someone trying to kill us?" Clara breathed, her pulse hammering against her ribs.
"Julian is trying to erase his digital trail before my team recovers the offshore server drives," Alexander said, moving with predator-like precision down the dimly lit hallway. "He thought Eleanor’s fortune was buried under twelve years of ashes. Now that you're standing in this house, his claim to the Vance trust is entirely void."
They reached the heavy mahogany doors of the private study. The digital keypad lock had been violently smashed with a heavy brass statue, the door cracked open an inch. Inside, the blue glow of a laptop illuminated the silhouette of Julian Vance frantically cramming thumb drives and thick Manila folders into a leather briefcase.
Alexander kicked the door open. It slammed against the drywall with a concussive thud.
Julian spun around, a snub-nosed revolver trembling in his right hand. Sweat plastered his blond hair to his forehead. "Stay back, Alex! Don't come a step closer!"
"Put the gun down, Julian," Alexander said, stepping directly into the room without raising his hands, shielding Clara behind his broad back. "You're holding a weapon with shaking hands against a man who watched you take your first steps. Don't make this uglier than it already is."
"Ugly?" Julian let out a ragged, hysterical laugh that bounced off the wood-paneled walls. "You made it ugly the day Father wrote Eleanor into the primary trust! She was going to give everything to her bastard daughter! You were too blinded by brotherly love to see she was cutting us both out!"
"So you paid Victoria's father to set the fire," Alexander said, his voice dropping to a deathly calm cadence. "You burned our sister alive for twenty percent more equity in a logistics company?"
"I was twenty-two! I was drowning in gambling debt!" Julian shrieked, the gun wobbling as his eyes darted to Clara hiding behind Alexander's shoulder. "And she was supposed to be in that nursery with Eleanor! Why is she here? Why didn't she burn?!"
"Because Eleanor loved her more than you loved your greed," Alexander said.
In a fraction of a second, before Julian could pull the trigger, Alexander lunged. He caught Julian’s wrist, twisting it inward until the bone snapped with a sickening pop. The revolver clattered to the carpet. Alexander didn't stop—he slammed his younger brother against the heavy mahogany desk, pinning his throat beneath a forearm.

"Where is the offshore registry, Julian?" Alexander growled, his eyes pitch-black with hatred. "Where did you put Eleanor's original trust deed?"
Julian choked, a bloody smile stretching across his lips despite the pain. "You're too late, big brother. Victoria’s father didn't just burn the house... he bought the coroner. He bought the judge. And twenty minutes ago, when Victoria texted him from the ballroom... he activated the kill switch on Eleanor's holding accounts. Everything Aria was supposed to inherit is currently being liquidated into shell companies in Zurich. You have nothing left to protect her with."
