Chapter 4 - The Frozen Empire

The cold rain began to hammer relentlessly against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the private library, drowning out the distant wail of police sirens approaching the outer gates of the estate.
Marcus and two armed operatives burst through the doorway, instantly securing the sobbing, broken Julian against the floor with zip-ties.
"Take him to the sub-basement holding cells," Alexander ordered, straightening his cuffs without breathing heavily. "Do not hand him over to the local precinct. The local police chief is on the Sterling family payroll. We use private transport to the federal district attorney at dawn."
"Understood, Mr. Vance," Marcus said, dragging Julian out of the room.
Clara stood by the doorway, her knees shaking so violently she had to lean against the doorframe for support. The sheer scale of what was happening was crushing her mind. She was just a maid who woke up at five in the morning to polish silverware and scrub grease from stove burners. Now, men were talking about millions of dollars, forged coroner reports, and murders committed in cold blood.
Alexander walked over to her. He pulled a pristine linen handkerchief from his pocket and gently wiped a smudge of soot and wine from her cheek.
"You're in shock," he said softly. "Come with me. We need to leave this house."
"Where?" Clara whispered. "I don't belong here. I don't belong anywhere near this family. My entire life was normal until twenty minutes ago—"
"Your life was stolen from you twenty minutes after you were born," Alexander interrupted firmly. "And as long as I draw breath, nobody will treat you like an outcast again."
He led her through a private rear elevator that bypassed the main foyer entirely, descending straight into the underground garage. A reinforced black SUV sat idling, headlights cutting through the subterranean shadows.
As they climbed into the rear leather seats, Alexander opened his secure laptop, connecting directly to his private forensic accountants in Zurich and London.
"Clara—or rather, Aria," Alexander began, turning the screen toward her. "Your mother wasn't just my sister. Eleanor Vance-Montgomery was the primary architect of this entire conglomerate. When she married your father, Julian Montgomery, they established a blind trust holding forty-five percent of Vance Global Holdings. That trust was designed to activate on your eighteenth birthday."
"I turned eighteen last month," Clara murmured, her hand tracing the silver phoenix locket.
"Exactly," Alexander said grimly. "Which is why Victoria and Julian panicked. Victoria didn't agree to marry me because she loved me. She married me so the Sterling family could access my board seats and vote to dissolve your mother's trust before you could ever be found. When Victoria saw that locket on your neck tonight, she knew the entire scheme was dead."
Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone mounted on the center console lit up with an urgent priority alert.
Alexander tapped the speakerphone. "Speak."
"Mr. Vance, it's Nathan from the Zurich branch," a frantic voice blared through the cabin. "We have a catastrophic breach. Arthur Sterling—Victoria’s father—just walked into the private vault facility in Geneva. He has Eleanor's original handwritten will and the physical master keys. He's claiming sole executorship due to Eleanor's 'deceased heir status.'"
Alexander’s eyes narrowed into razor-thin slits. "He can't unlock the master vault without the genetic verification code. That requires direct lineage DNA."
"He knows that, sir," Nathan replied, his voice trembling. "He brought a medical preservation vial containing a blood sample labeled Eleanor Vance, 2014. If the Swiss automated system accepts the legacy DNA match, the entire seventy-billion-dollar trust will transfer to his Cayman shell corporation within thirty minutes."
Alexander slammed his palm against the armrest. "He stole Eleanor's autopsy samples from the coroner twelve years ago."
Clara looked at the screen, then down at her own hand. "Wait."
Alexander looked over at her. "What is it?"
"My mother..." Clara's voice shook, but her eyes suddenly sharpened with a buried memory coming to the surface. "Before she put me out the window... she didn't just give me the locket. She used a small sewing needle from her pocket. She pricked my thumb and pressed it into the back of the locket until the metal clicked."
Alexander’s breath caught in his chest. He grabbed the locket from her hand, flipping it over in the dim light of the vehicle.

Hidden beneath twelve years of grime and scratches on the back casing was a microscopic biometric sensor—a proprietary security mechanism developed exclusively by Vance Aerospace.
"It wasn't a keepsake," Alexander whispered in awe. "Eleanor didn't just give you a necklace... she gave you the biological master override."
