Chapter 8 - The Raid in Zurich

Seventy-two hours later, a secure video call connected between my San Francisco office and the U.S. Consulate in Zurich, Switzerland.

Marcus Hayes adjusted the high-definition monitor on my desk. On the screen sat Federal Special Agent Vance Henderson alongside a frail, pale young woman wrapped in a thick woolen cardigan.

Her dark hair was pulled back into a simple ponytail, and her sunken green eyes carried the exhaustion of a prisoner who had almost forgotten the warmth of daylight.

"Claire," Agent Henderson said through the speaker. "We successfully executed the search and rescue order on the Sanatorium Waldheim facility at dawn. Swiss Federal Police have taken the facility director into custody. Meet Rebecca Thorne."

Rebecca looked into the webcam lens. When she saw the bandage on my temple, her hand flew to her mouth, and she began to weep quietly.

"He did that to you, didn't he?" Rebecca's voice was raspy, unused to normal conversation. "Adrian."

"He tried to," I replied gently. "But he failed. You're safe now, Rebecca. The jet is waiting at the tarmac to bring you back to California."

Rebecca wiped a tear from her cheek, her expression hardening from fragile victim to an iron-willed survivor. "They kept me sedated in a locked wing for four years. Every six months, Charles Vance’s personal attorney came with updated documents for me to sign under threat of electroshock therapy. But I kept something they didn't know about."

I leaned forward. "What did you keep, Rebecca?"

"Before Adrian kidnapped me, I backed up their entire corporate ledger—the real one, showing thirty years of money laundering, bribery of state judges, and illegal shell corporations used to buy off wine country land grants. I hid the encrypted drive inside a safety deposit box in Geneva."

Rebecca looked straight through the screen, her eyes burning with vengeance.

"It has Eleanor's signature on every single offshore transfer."
