Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Name

That evening, we held a dinner at the grand outdoor table overlooking the valley.

There were no charcoal suits, no forced smiles, and no one calculating how much money they could bleed from the person sitting next to them. Instead, the table was filled with laughter, fresh sourdough bread, homegrown roasted vegetables, and genuine warmth.

Maya poured chilled white wine into our glasses.

Rebecca raised hers into the twilight air. "To the women who refused to disappear."

"To the women who refused to disappear," we echoed, clinking our glasses together. The clear ring of the crystal bell sounded bright and unbroken over the quiet vineyard.

I looked down at the simple gold band on my right hand—not a wedding ring, but a custom-made ring forged from the melted scrap metal of the old carriage house lock.

My phone screen lit up on the corner of the table one last time. A final email arrived from the county recorder’s office, confirming that the last legal paperwork had been processed.

My name on every deed, every lease, and every building was mine alone: Claire Vance.

I hadn't kept the name to honor their family; I kept it to redefine it. The name no longer belonged to greedy men who ruled through intimidation and violence behind closed doors. It belonged to the woman who took their kingdom, tore down their walls, and built an empire of her own on top of the ruins.

I smiled, locked the phone, and turned back to the laughter at the table.
