Chapter 1 - The Shattered Plate

Blood dripped from my temple onto the crisp white tablecloth, soaking into the fine linen like a dark red coin.
Just two seconds earlier, Adrian’s hand had closed around a heavy porcelain dinner plate. He hadn’t hesitated. He pivoted his shoulder and swung it straight into the side of my face. The ceramic exploded against my skull with a sickening crack. Sauced beef, broken shards, and crimson splatter scattered over the wineglasses.
Pain detonated behind my eyes. The room tilted violently.
"Claire!" someone gasped, but nobody stood up. Nobody rushed to my side.
Adrian towered over me, his tailored charcoal suit pristine, his chest heaving. His knuckles were white. He didn’t look remorseful; he looked satisfied. He thought the strike had broken my spine. He thought physical pain would finally make me bow down and hand over the deeds to my life.
Across the long mahogany table, my mother-in-law, Eleanor, slowly set down her fork. Her face was pale, but her eyes were cold, calculating stones. Beside her, Charles, Adrian’s father, stared silently into his Pinot Noir as if searching for answers in the red swirl. Down at the far end, Adrian’s cousin quietly ushered her two crying toddlers out toward the hallway, shutting the double doors behind them.
They weren't in shock. They were waiting to see if his blow had worked.
I planted both palms flat against the mahogany to stop the spinning world. I refused to faint. I refused to cry. The stinging heat along my hairline was sharp, but my mind snapped into diamond-hard clarity.
This whole dinner at the Napa vineyard estate had been a trap from the start.
I reached up, felt a jagged shard of ceramic caught in my hair, and slowly pulled it free. Blood coated my fingers. I set the bloody piece of porcelain down right beside Adrian’s silverware with a quiet clink.
I grabbed a white cloth napkin, pressed it against my bleeding temple, and looked up into my husband’s eyes.
"You have no idea who you just made an enemy of," I whispered.
Adrian’s jaw tightened. "Don't tempt me, Claire."
I reached into my designer handbag on the floor, pulled out my iPhone, and smeared blood across the glass as I swiped open the keypad.
I didn't call a cab. I dialed 911.
"911, what is your emergency?" the dispatcher’s voice rang clear through the quiet room.

"My name is Claire Vance," I said, my voice steady, ice-cold. "My husband, Adrian Vance, just assaulted me. He smashed a ceramic plate over my head at 1440 Silverado Trail. Send police and an ambulance immediately."
The entire room went into instant panic.
