Chapter 2 - The Silent Code

"Hang up that phone right now!" Eleanor hissed, rushing around the table. Her polished aristocratic mask was completely gone, replaced by raw desperation. "Claire, you are blowing this completely out of proportion!"

"He assaulted me," I told the dispatcher clearly. "There are nearly twenty witnesses in this room."

"Claire, hang it up!" Adrian snarled, stepping toward me, his hand outstretched to rip the device from my grip.

"Take another step," I said into the phone, "and I will inform the dispatcher that you are attacking me again."

Adrian froze mid-stride. For the first time since we met three years ago, pure fear flickered in his hazel eyes.

Charles stood up, smoothing his cashmere sweater, trying to use his booming corporate boardroom voice. "Claire, be reasonable. We are a prominent family. We handle our private disputes behind closed doors. You do not destroy a marriage over a burst of temper."

"A burst of temper?" I pressed the stained napkin harder against the wound. "He fractured a plate against my skull because I refused to hand my pre-marital penthouse over to your wife and pay her twenty-eight hundred dollars a month to live in it."

"She is your mother-in-law! She deserves respect!" Charles snapped.

"She owns three beachfront properties in Carmel," I spat back. "She wanted to bleed me dry, and you all sat here orchestrating it like vultures."

Before Charles could bark another order, a chair screeched violently backward at the far corner of the table.

Maya—Adrian’s sister-in-law, married to his older brother Julian—stood up so fast her water goblet knocked over, spilling across the mahogany. She had sat through dinner like a ghost, pale, meek, never uttering a syllable.

Now, she sprinted across the dining hall and threw herself squarely between Adrian and me.

"Get out of the way, Maya," Adrian growled, his fists clenching. "This is between me and my wife."

"Don't you touch her!" Maya yelled, her voice trembling with intense fury. "You don't touch another woman in this house, Adrian. Not again!"

The room fell into an eerie, suffocating dead silence.

Eleanor’s face drained of whatever color remained. Charles looked like he had been slapped across the mouth.

"Maya, shut your mouth," Charles warned, his voice dropped to a dangerous pitch. "Go back upstairs to your children."

Maya didn't back down. Her eyes locked onto mine. There wasn't just fear in her gaze—there was a dark, long-buried secret staring right back at me.

Down the long driveway through the vineyard, distant sirens wailed, echoing against the hills. Red and blue lights began flashing across the tall dining-room windows.

Maya leaned into my ear, her breath ragged.

"When the cops get here," Maya whispered, "tell them to search the old cellar under the carriage house."
