Chapter 3: The Colonel's Judgment

Colonel Bennett stood up slowly.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt smaller.
Colder.
Ryan tried to explain.
"It isn't what it looks like."
Colonel Bennett looked at him.
"That sentence is always spoken by people who know exactly what it looks like."
Ryan's face changed.
"You don't understand our marriage."
Colonel Bennett walked closer.
"No."
He nodded.
"You're right."
"I don't understand how a man can watch his pregnant wife suffer and call her unstable."
Ryan became angry.
"You think I'm the villain because she told you one side of the story?"
Colonel Bennett looked at Emily.
Then back at Ryan.
"My daughter was afraid to look at me."
A pause.
"That tells me everything."
Linda suddenly stepped forward.
"This family has done everything for her."
Colonel Bennett turned.
"Everything?"
Linda nodded.
"She had food. A home. A husband."
Colonel Bennett looked at the untouched soup on the table.
Then the water beside Emily's bed.
"Care is not measured by what sits on a table."
His eyes hardened.
"It is measured by how someone feels when they are alone."
Linda became silent.
Later that evening, Colonel Bennett took Emily to the hospital.
Doctors confirmed what he already suspected.
The injuries were not caused by pregnancy.
They were caused by repeated physical harm.
Emily sat in the hospital room holding her father's hand.
"I'm sorry."
Colonel Bennett looked confused.
"For what?"
"For letting this happen."
His eyes softened.
"Daughter."
He squeezed her hand.
"You survived."
A pause.
"That is not weakness."
Emily finally cried.
Not because she was afraid.
Because for the first time...
She was safe.
Meanwhile, Ryan and Linda sat inside the apartment.
They thought they could control the situation.
They were wrong.
Because Colonel Bennett had already made one phone call.
A legal team.
A protection team.
May you like
And an investigation.
Everything they had hidden was about to come into the light.
