Chapter 2: The Truth Beneath the Blanket

The footsteps outside the bedroom grew louder.

Slow.

Heavy.

Certain.

Everyone in the room turned toward the door.

Ryan's face lost what little confidence he had left.

Linda stopped speaking.

Even Emily opened her eyes.

Because she recognized those footsteps.

They belonged to someone who had been missing from her life for months.

Someone she had been too afraid to call.

The bedroom door opened.

Standing there was Colonel James Bennett's longtime military assistant, Captain David Miller.

He held a small folder in his hand.

"Sir," David said quietly.

Colonel Bennett looked at him.

"Tell me you found something."

Ryan immediately stepped forward.

"Found something? What does that mean?"

But Colonel Bennett ignored him.

His eyes remained fixed on David.

The captain opened the folder.

"Colonel, I checked every medical record, every appointment, and every message between Mrs. Bennett and the family."

A cold silence filled the room.

"And sir..."

David hesitated.

"Your daughter has not been receiving the care they claimed."

Emily's breathing stopped.

Ryan's jaw tightened.

Linda looked away.

Colonel Bennett slowly stood.

"What do you mean?"

David swallowed.

"She missed three prenatal appointments."

Ryan quickly interrupted.

"Because she was emotional. She refused to go."

Colonel Bennett turned toward him.

"Is that true, Emily?"

She said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Colonel Bennett's expression changed.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something deeper.

Disappointment.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Emily looked down.

Because the truth was worse than the lie.

"Because every time I tried..."

Her voice cracked.

"They told me nobody would believe me."

Ryan looked offended.

"Emily, don't do this."

Her eyes moved toward him.

For the first time in months...

She didn't look afraid.

"You told everyone I was crazy."

The room froze.

"You told my father I was difficult."

Ryan shook his head.

"Because you were acting differently."

Emily slowly pulled the blanket closer.

"No."

A tear fell.

"I was scared."

Colonel Bennett looked at the blanket.

The same blanket Emily had refused to let anyone touch.

His military instincts were screaming.

He had seen soldiers hide injuries.

He had seen people hide pain because they were afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.

And now he realized his daughter had been doing the same thing.

"Daughter..."

His voice became softer.

"Show me."

Emily closed her eyes.

For a moment, she couldn't move.

Then she whispered:

"If I show you..."

Her voice trembled.

"They will hate me."

Colonel Bennett sat beside her.

He held her hand.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"They already hurt you."

A long silence.

Then Emily slowly released her grip.

Her fingers moved toward the edge of the blanket.

Ryan stepped forward.

"Emily, don't."

Colonel Bennett immediately turned.

The look on his face stopped Ryan.

"One more word..."

His voice was quiet.

But everyone understood the warning.

Ryan stepped back.

Emily slowly pulled the blanket down.

And the room went silent.

Because the truth was finally visible.

Faint bruises.

Old injuries.

Marks that no pregnancy could explain.

Linda covered her mouth.

Ryan looked away.

Colonel Bennett stared.

A father.

A soldier.

A man who had spent his entire life protecting others.

But he couldn't protect his own daughter.

And that realization broke something inside him.
