Chapter 9 - WHAT RICHARD DID

“Noah!”

Evelyn’s voice came through the shutter.

“Take Lily and go!”

“No!”

“Get those drives out!”

“I’m not leaving you again!”

He searched for a release.

Nothing.

Lily cried beside him.

Then footsteps approached.

Richard stumbled into the corridor.

Vanessa supported him.

Blood stained his shirt.

Noah ran to him.

“Open it!”

Richard saw the shutter.

“Evelyn?”

“I’m here,” she called.

For a moment, Richard simply stared.

Three years of guilt seemed to hit him at once.

“Evie.”

“Don’t.”

Her voice was ice.

Richard flinched.

Noah pointed to the keypad.

“Open the door.”

Richard entered his authorization.

The shutter stopped.

Then rose.

Evelyn emerged.

Richard reached toward her.

She slapped him.

Hard.

Noah didn’t move.

Neither did Lily.

Richard lowered his hand.

“I deserved that.”

“You deserve prison.”

“I know.”

“You locked me in that room.”

“I know.”

“You let our children bury an empty coffin.”

Richard’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Why?”

Richard looked at Noah and Lily.

“Because I was a coward.”

The countdown showed two minutes.

Richard entered another code.

PURGE SUSPENDED.

Everyone exhaled.

Then:

MANUAL OVERRIDE ACTIVE.

Mercer.

Richard swore.

“He’s in the boiler room.”

Noah looked at his father.

“Tell us the truth.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

Richard stared at him.

Then nodded.

He admitted everything.

He had inherited the criminal network from his father.

At first, he tried to dismantle it quietly.

Then he discovered how deeply the family fortune depended on it.

If he exposed the truth, thousands of employees could lose jobs.

Hospitals might close.

The family would be ruined.

Those were the excuses he used.

Eventually, excuses became participation.

He signed payments.

Covered investigations.

Destroyed evidence.

Then Evelyn discovered everything.

“I panicked.”

“You tried to kill her,” Noah said.

“I locked the archive.”

Richard swallowed.

“But the fire wasn’t supposed to happen.”

“Who started it?”

“Mercer.”

Evelyn stared.

Richard explained that he intended to frighten Evelyn and retrieve the files.

Mercer decided a dead witness was safer.

When Richard realized the room was burning, he tried to reopen it.

The lock had been disabled.

“I thought you died.”

“But Mercer found her,” Noah said.

“Yes.”

“When did you learn she survived?”

Richard looked ashamed.

“Six months later.”

Lily whispered, “And you left her downstairs?”

Richard’s face broke.

“Mercer threatened you.”

Noah laughed bitterly.

“So you chose us?”

“I chose silence.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“I know.”

Noah looked at his father.

He had spent years imagining this reunion.

None of his fantasies included hating him.

The countdown hit one minute.

Richard looked at the screen.

“Mercer can’t trigger the burn system remotely after forty seconds.”

“What happens then?”

“He has to activate it manually.”

Evelyn understood.

“He’ll be at the furnace.”

Richard handed Noah his phone.

“Take your mother and sister outside.”

“What are you doing?”

“Ending something I should have ended years ago.”

“Dad.”

Richard looked at him.

Noah wanted to say something.

Forgive him.

Condemn him.

Beg him not to go.

Nothing came.

Richard nodded as if he understood.

Then he ran toward the boiler room.

Thirty seconds.

Evelyn grabbed Noah.

“Move!”

They ran.

Behind them, a gunshot echoed.

Then another.

The countdown stopped at:

00:00:07.

Noah turned.

“Dad?”

May you like

Silence.

Then the mansion shook from a massive explosion below.
