THE KNOCKING BEHIND THE WALLS / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - THE LETTER RICHARD NEVER SENT

Police flooded the property.

Richard was taken to an ambulance.

Mercer’s body was recovered.

The fire department fought the blaze.

But Noah barely noticed any of it.

He stared at the letter in Vanessa’s hand.

“What do you mean?”

Vanessa handed it to him.

The envelope had already been opened.

Noah recognized his mother’s handwriting.

He looked at Richard.

“You read them?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Most of them.”

Noah felt sick.

“You knew she was writing to us?”

“Yes.”

“And you hid them?”

“I thought Mercer would hurt you if you knew.”

Noah laughed without humor.

“You keep saying you protected us.”

Richard said nothing.

“But every time you protected us, somebody else suffered.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Noah’s voice broke.

“You got to leave.”

Richard looked at him.

“You stayed in hotels.”

“Meetings.”

“Private planes.”

“You came home when you wanted.”

“Mom was under the house!”

Lily started crying.

Evelyn pulled her close.

Noah couldn’t stop.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew!”

“Yes!”

Richard finally shouted back.

Then his face collapsed.

“I knew.”

Silence.

Richard covered his face.

“And every day I hated myself for it.”

Noah shook his head.

“That didn’t help her.”

“No.”

“It didn’t help us.”

“No.”

“So stop making your guilt sound like punishment.”

Richard looked at his son.

Noah’s words had landed.

Good.

They were supposed to.

Police approached.

A detective named Mara Hayes introduced herself.

Noah immediately looked at Evelyn.

Could they trust her?

Hayes seemed to understand.

“I know the ledger contains law-enforcement names.”

Everyone stared.

“How?” Evelyn asked.

Hayes held up her phone.

“Because portions of it were sent to six newspapers, two federal offices, three civil-rights attorneys, and apparently a seventeen-year-old true-crime blogger in Oregon.”

Noah blinked.

“I may have typed one email address wrong.”

Hayes almost smiled.

“It worked.”

The evidence was public enough that nobody could quietly bury it anymore.

Richard extended his wrists.

Hayes looked at him.

“You understand you’re not being arrested solely for tonight.”

“Yes.”

“Conspiracy.”

“Yes.”

“Fraud.”

“Yes.”

“Obstruction.”

“Yes.”

“Unlawful imprisonment.”

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“Yes.”

Hayes cuffed him.

Lily cried harder.

Richard knelt as far as the cuffs allowed.

“Lily.”

She looked at him.

“I love you.”

“Then why did you leave Mommy?”

Richard had no answer that could fix it.

So he gave the only honest one.

“Because I was weak.”

Lily stared at him.

Then whispered:

“I don’t want to be weak like you.”

Richard began crying.

Neither Noah nor Evelyn comforted him.

Police led him away.

Vanessa watched.

Then Hayes turned toward her.

“Vanessa Cross?”

Vanessa straightened.

“Yes.”

“You’re under arrest.”

Vanessa didn’t resist.

As Hayes cuffed her, Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

“I really did love Rachel.”

Evelyn’s face softened only slightly.

“I know.”

“I wanted justice.”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You wanted revenge.”

Vanessa looked away.

Evelyn continued.

“There’s a difference.”

Vanessa was led toward another police car.

Then she stopped beside Noah.

“One more thing.”

“What?”

“Your mother wasn’t the first person kept beneath this house.”

Noah went cold.

Vanessa nodded toward the burning mansion.

“The ledger has names.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“It has living names.”

Before Noah could ask what she meant, police pushed Vanessa into the car.

Behind them, firefighters broke through another sealed wall.

A firefighter shouted.

“Detective!”

Everyone turned.

“We found another room.”
