Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S REAL NAME

“Drop it.”
Richard’s hand shook.
Vanessa slowly lowered her weapon.
Mercer groaned on the floor.
Noah backed against the wall.
“Dad.”
Richard looked at him.
“Where’s Lily?”
“With Mom.”
“Good.”
“Why?”
Richard almost smiled.
“Because Evelyn knows what to do.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You really think she’s going to save you?”
Richard’s face hardened.
“No.”
He looked at Noah.
“I think she’s going to destroy me.”
Noah didn’t understand.
Richard told him to retrieve the ledger from the bottom of the dumbwaiter.
“Take it to your mother.”
“What about you?”
“I’m staying here.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
Again.
That answer.
Richard seemed to understand trust was something he no longer deserved.
Noah ran.
At the bottom of the shaft, he found the ledger in the old servants’ kitchen.
Lily was waiting.
“Mom said hurry.”
They returned underground.
Evelyn saw the ledger and almost collapsed with relief.
“You found it.”
“We still can’t open the door.”
“Look inside the back cover.”
Noah did.
A thin brass key was sewn into the leather.
He ripped it free.
It fit an emergency lock beneath the keypad.
The steel door opened.
Lily flew into Evelyn’s arms.
Evelyn dropped to her knees.
Mother and daughter clung to each other.
Noah stood frozen.
Then Evelyn reached for him.
That broke him.
He fell into her arms.
For a few seconds, there was no conspiracy.
No fire.
No Mercer.
No Vanessa.
No father who had betrayed them.
There was only their mother.
Alive.
“I’m sorry,” Noah sobbed.
Evelyn held him tighter.
“For what?”
“I believed you were dead.”
“Oh, baby.”
“I stopped looking.”
“You were a child.”
“I should’ve known.”
“You survived.”
She pulled back and held his face.
“That was your job.”
Lily refused to release her.
Evelyn kissed her hair repeatedly.
Then she saw the bruise forming on Noah’s face.
“Who did that?”
“Mercer.”
Something fierce appeared in Evelyn’s eyes.
“Where is he?”
Noah explained.
Evelyn stood.
Her legs were weak.
Noah helped her.
“We need to leave.”
“Not yet.”
“Mom.”
“Not without the archive.”
“The ledger?”
“That’s only the index.”
Noah stared.
“The evidence is bigger?”
“Much bigger.”
Evelyn led them through another hidden passage.
As they walked, she told them Vanessa’s real story.
Her name was Vanessa Cross.
Her younger sister, Rachel, had been a patient at one of the foundation clinics.
Rachel died during an unauthorized drug trial.
The foundation falsified the records.
Vanessa spent years trying to prove it.
“So she came here for revenge?” Noah asked.
“At first.”
“Then why did she help Mercer?”
“Because revenge became greed.”
Vanessa discovered how much money was hidden.
Instead of exposing the network, she wanted control of it.
She blackmailed Richard.
Manipulated Mercer.
Kept Evelyn alive because Evelyn possessed access codes nobody else knew.
“And Dad?”
Evelyn looked ahead.
“Your father is guilty.”
Noah waited.
“But?”
“But guilty people can still be trapped by worse people.”
That was not forgiveness.
Noah understood that.
They reached the old archive chamber beneath the burned library.
Rows of servers hummed behind reinforced glass.
Evelyn entered a code.
The door unlocked.
Inside were hard drives, files, photographs, medical records.
Enough evidence to destroy dozens of powerful people.
Noah whispered, “We take everything.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“We can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because Mercer installed a purge system.”
She pointed to a countdown panel.
00:09:41
Noah stared.
“Nine minutes?”
Evelyn went pale.
“He activated it.”
“If it reaches zero?”
“Everything erases.”
Lily pointed to another line on the screen.
THERMAL DESTRUCTION ENABLED.
Noah looked at his mother.
“What does that mean?”
May you like
Evelyn’s face drained of color.
“It means this house is going to burn again.”
