Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER WHO DISAPPEARED
Arthur stared at Richard.
Seventeen years vanished in one second.
“You’re supposed to be in Switzerland.”
Richard smiled.
“You’re supposed to be innocent.”
Arthur lunged forward.
Daniel caught him.
“Arthur.”
Richard didn’t flinch.
He looked almost amused.
The detective stepped between them.
“Mr. Richard Sterling contacted us approximately forty minutes ago.”
Arthur stared at his brother.
“What did you tell them?”
“The truth.”
“You wouldn’t recognize the truth if it walked into this room.”
Richard looked toward Maya.
“Actually, it did.”
Maya stiffened.
Richard stepped closer.
“You look like Charles.”
“Stay away from her.”
Arthur’s voice echoed through the vault.
Richard smiled.
“There’s the protective big brother.”
Maya stared at him.
“You knew my mother?”
Richard’s expression softened.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She saved my life.”
Arthur frowned.
Richard looked at him.
“You really know nothing, do you?”
Police escorted Arthur upstairs.
Reporters had already gathered outside.
Someone had tipped them off.
Arthur knew exactly who.
Camera flashes exploded.
“Mr. Sterling!”
“Did you murder Judge Whitmore?”
“Was your wife involved?”
“Where is Eleanor Sterling?”
Arthur said nothing.
Richard watched from the doorway.
Maya stood beside him.
Arthur caught her eyes.
For one second, he wanted to tell her not to trust Richard.
Then the police pushed him into the car.
Richard leaned toward Maya.
“If you want to understand why your mother died, come with me.”
Maya stared at him.
“My mother died from cancer.”
Richard’s face changed.
“No.”
