Chapter 3 - LOCKER 314

00:59.
00:58.
00:57.
Daniel stared at the digital numbers.
“What the hell is that?”
Arthur moved toward the wall.
“Find it.”
Daniel searched behind the storage boxes.
Maya remained frozen.
“Your sister.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Don’t listen to Eleanor.”
“She knew about this place.”
“She knew about the key.”
“She knew about my mother.”
“I know.”
“She knows more about my life than I do.”
Arthur grabbed her shoulders.
“That doesn’t mean she’s telling the truth.”
00:42.
Daniel found a metal panel.
“Here.”
He ripped it open.
Inside was a small electronic device.
Arthur stared.
“Bomb?”
Daniel examined it.
“No.”
“What?”
“Ventilation control.”
00:31.
Daniel looked upward.
“She’s shutting off the air.”
Arthur glanced around the sealed vault.
“How long?”
“Depends how airtight this room is.”
The timer reached zero.
The ventilation system stopped.
Silence.
Maya whispered.
“She wants us alive.”
Arthur looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“If she wanted us dead, she could’ve done something faster.”
Daniel nodded reluctantly.
“She wants time.”
“For what?”
Maya looked at the red notebook.
“For us to read.”
Arthur opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Judges.
Doctors.
Lawyers.
Politicians.
Executives.
Millions of dollars moved through shell companies.
Arthur recognized several names from the gala.
Daniel leaned closer.
“What is this?”
Arthur turned pages.
“My father’s handwriting.”
Maya stared.
“Your father?”
“Charles Sterling.”
Arthur kept reading.
Then stopped.
One entry had been underlined.
ISABEL — $2,000,000 — AGREEMENT TERMINATED.
Another line appeared beneath it.
CHILD RELOCATED.
Maya’s breathing stopped.
“What child?”
Arthur turned the page.
It had been torn out.
Daniel swore under his breath.
Arthur picked up the cassette tape.
A handwritten date appeared.
October 14, 2000.
The day Maya was born.
Maya stared at it.
“We need to hear that.”
Daniel looked around.
“With what?”
Arthur remembered something.
“Old vault manager’s desk.”
They searched.
In a drawer beneath decades of dust, Arthur found a portable cassette recorder.
He inserted the tape.
Static.
Then a woman’s voice.
Isabel.
Maya covered her mouth.
“My God.”
Isabel sounded frightened.
“If Arthur ever hears this, I need him to understand that I tried.”
Arthur leaned toward the recorder.
“I tried to tell him.”
“But Charles found out first.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
His father.
Isabel continued.
“He said Arthur could never know the truth about Maya.”
Maya stared at Arthur.
Arthur barely breathed.
Then Isabel said:
“Because Maya is not Arthur’s child.”
Maya shut her eyes.
“She is Charles Sterling’s daughter.”
Arthur staggered backward.
Daniel stared at him.
Arthur whispered.
“My father?”
The recording continued.
“I hated him.”
“I hated what he did.”
“But I was twenty-three.”
“He owned the hotel.”
“He controlled my job.”
“My apartment.”
“My immigration paperwork.”
“Everything.”
Maya began crying silently.
Arthur looked sick.
Isabel continued.
“When I became pregnant, Charles offered me money.”
“I refused.”
“He threatened Arthur.”
“He said Arthur would lose everything if I stayed.”
“So I disappeared.”
Arthur sank into a chair.
Memories crashed into him.
Isabel suddenly leaving.
His father claiming she had stolen money.
Judge Whitmore telling him to forget her.
Arthur believing them.
For twenty-six years.
Maya looked at him.
“You believed she was a thief?”
Arthur couldn’t meet her eyes.
“Yes.”
Maya turned away.
The tape continued.
“There is one person I trusted.”
“Samuel Whitmore.”
Arthur looked up.
“He helped me create new documents.”
“He promised Maya would never belong to the Sterlings.”
“But if Charles ever finds us…”
Static interrupted.
Then Isabel’s voice returned.
“…Arthur must know Eleanor was there.”
Arthur stood.
“What?”
Maya rewound the tape.
They listened again.
“Arthur must know Eleanor was there.”
Daniel stared at Arthur.
“How old was Eleanor?”
Arthur calculated.
“Twenty-one.”
Maya looked at him.
“She knew my mother?”
Arthur’s face hardened.
“Apparently.”
A banging sound came from outside.
Daniel drew his weapon.
“Back.”
Metal scraped.
The vault door opened.
Police officers rushed inside.
Arthur shielded his eyes from the flashlights.
A detective stepped forward.
“Arthur Sterling?”
“Yes.”
“You need to come with us.”
“Did you find Eleanor?”
The detective’s expression remained cold.
“This isn’t about Eleanor.”
Two officers approached Arthur.
Daniel stepped between them.
“What’s going on?”
The detective held up a plastic evidence bag.
Inside was the missing wineglass.
Arthur stared.
“Where did you find that?”
“Your penthouse.”
Arthur went silent.
The detective continued.
“We also found the security tablet.”
Maya whispered.
“No.”
“Along with the substance used on Judge Whitmore.”
Arthur stared at him.
“Where?”
“In Mr. Sterling’s bedroom safe.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“That safe requires Arthur’s fingerprint.”
The detective nodded.
“Which is one reason this is going to be difficult to explain.”
Arthur understood.
Eleanor had not escaped.
She had spent the blackout building a case against him.
The detective stepped closer.
“Arthur Sterling, you’re under arrest for the murder of Judge Samuel Whitmore.”
Maya stared at Arthur.
Arthur slowly extended his hands.
Handcuffs closed around his wrists.
Then the detective added one final sentence.
“And we have a witness.”
Arthur looked at him.
“Who?”
The detective turned toward the corridor.
A man stepped from behind the officers.
Arthur stopped breathing.
His younger brother.
Richard Sterling.
A man Arthur had not spoken to in seventeen years.
Richard smiled.
“Hello, Arthur.”
Then he looked at Maya.
May you like
His smile vanished.
“You found her.”
