Chapter 4 – Justice for Lily
Police obtained the restaurant's security footage.
Every camera showed the same sequence.
While Lily washed her hands...
Her stepmother removed a tiny plastic packet from her purse.
She poured a fine beige powder into the soup.
Then she calmly stirred it before sitting back down with a gentle smile.
There was no room for excuses.
A forensic laboratory confirmed the powder contained concentrated peanut protein.
When detectives searched her home, they discovered multiple identical packets hidden inside a locked cosmetic case, along with internet searches about triggering allergic reactions without leaving obvious evidence.
Faced with overwhelming evidence, she finally confessed.
She had never wanted Lily dead immediately.
She wanted Lily to appear "unstable" and "impossible to care for," hoping the repeated incidents would convince her husband to place the child in a long-term residential facility so she could have his attention—and eventually control of the family's assets—without Lily in the picture.
Instead, she was arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, and food tampering.
Months later, Lily returned to the same restaurant.
The cook, whose quick actions had saved her life, welcomed her with a warm smile.
This time, the chef personally prepared her meal in a separate allergy-safe kitchen.
Her father sat beside her—not across from her—with tears in his eyes.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"I should have believed you the first time."
Lily looked at him for a long moment before reaching for his hand.
"I know."
Outside, life continued as usual.
