Chapter 3 – The Hidden Pattern

Lily was stabilized inside the emergency room.

Doctors confirmed what the cook had suspected.

Someone had intentionally contaminated her food with peanut protein.

Even worse...

It wasn't the first time.

A pediatric allergist carefully reviewed Lily's medical records.

He frowned.

"How many allergic reactions has she had this year?"

The father looked confused.

"I... I don't know."

The stepmother answered immediately.

"Six."

The doctor slowly looked up.

"That's impossible."

"What?"

"Children with severe allergies don't accidentally ingest the exact same allergen six separate times."

He opened Lily's chart.

"Each incident happened when only one adult prepared her meals."

Silence filled the consultation room.

The doctor continued.

"Schools followed the allergy protocol."

"Restaurants documented ingredient changes."

"Grandparents never reported an incident."

He turned another page.

"The only common denominator..."

His eyes landed on the stepmother.

"...is you."

The father slowly turned toward his wife.

His hands began shaking.

"No..."

She laughed nervously.

"You're actually accusing me?"

Then a nurse hurried into the room.

"We found this inside Lily's backpack."

It was a small notebook.

Every page was written in careful seven-year-old handwriting.

Monday: She said if I behaved, she wouldn't put the powder in my food.

Thursday: My tummy hurt again.

Saturday: Daddy didn't believe me.

The final page made everyone freeze.

If I die, please tell Daddy I wasn't lying.

The father broke.

He fell to his knees beside Lily's hospital bed, sobbing harder than he ever had in his life.
