Chapter 2 – The Injection That Exposed the Lie

The cook crossed the dining room in seconds.

"Move aside."

His voice was calm, but it carried the authority of someone who had seen death before.

Lily's father instinctively stepped back.

"What are you doing?" the stepmother protested. "She's fine. She's done this before."

"No," the cook replied without even looking at her. "She isn't."

He knelt beside Lily.

Her lips had turned blue.

Her breathing was reduced to tiny desperate gasps.

The swelling around her throat was getting worse by the second.

He pressed the injector firmly against her thigh.

Click.

The restaurant fell completely silent.

Several customers instinctively reached for their phones.

A waitress called 911.

Within seconds, Lily's breathing began to ease.

Tiny, shaky breaths became longer.

Color slowly returned to her face.

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she whispered,

"...It still hurts..."

The cook gently held her hand.

"I know, sweetheart. Stay with me."

The father collapsed into the booth beside her.

"What... what happened?"

The cook looked directly into his eyes.

"Your daughter didn't have an autistic meltdown."

He pointed toward the untouched bowl of soup.

"She almost died from anaphylactic shock."

The father's face drained of color.

The stepmother immediately folded her arms.

"That's ridiculous."

"She's allergic to everything."

"She probably forgot."

Lily weakly shook her head.

"No..."

"Daddy..."

"I asked if there were peanuts..."

"She said there weren't..."

The cook slowly lifted the soup spoon.

Floating on the surface were tiny beige granules.

His expression hardened.

"These don't belong in this recipe."

The ambulance sirens echoed outside.

As paramedics rushed inside, one of the diners quietly spoke up.

"I saw her."

Everyone turned.

The elderly woman sitting two booths away slowly raised her trembling hand.

"I watched the woman sprinkle something into the soup while the little girl was in the restroom."

The entire restaurant stared at Lily's stepmother.
