Chapter 3 - THE BROTHER WHO WATCHED

Daniel called Ethan twelve times.

No answer.

By sunrise, police had visited Ethan’s apartment.

Empty.

His car was gone.

His passport was missing.

That made him more than a witness.

It made him a man running from something.

Claire woke at 9:06 a.m.

Daniel was beside her.

Her eyes opened slowly.

“Hey.”

Claire looked confused.

Then frightened.

“Vanessa.”

“She’s gone.”

Claire tried to sit up.

Pain stopped her.

Daniel gently lowered her back.

“We recovered the recording.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“So you know.”

“I know she pushed you.”

Claire looked at him.

“That isn’t what I meant.”

Daniel froze.

“What do you mean?”

Claire stared toward the hospital door.

“Close it.”

He did.

She lowered her voice.

“Three months ago, I noticed money disappearing from the foundation.”

“How much?”

“Almost two million dollars.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

“I thought so too.”

Claire explained that payments had been routed through consulting companies.

The invoices looked legitimate.

But the companies didn’t exist.

She had followed the transfers.

The money eventually reached an offshore account.

“Whose?”

Claire looked at him.

“I couldn’t prove it.”

“Claire.”

“I found Ethan’s name on one authorization.”

Daniel sat back.

His brother had worked for Whitmore Holdings for seven years.

He handled corporate partnerships.

Daniel had trusted him with everything.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I knew what you’d do.”

“What?”

“Protect him.”

Daniel wanted to argue.

He couldn’t.

Claire continued.

“Yesterday morning, Vanessa came to see me.”

“Why?”

“She knew I was investigating.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire swallowed.

“She offered me money.”

Daniel laughed once in disbelief.

“She tried to bribe you?”

“Five million dollars.”

“To do what?”

“Destroy the evidence and leave you.”

Daniel stared at her.

“She wanted you, Daniel.”

The words landed heavily.

Vanessa had been his friend since college.

She had introduced Daniel and Claire eleven years earlier.

Daniel had always considered her family.

Claire watched his face.

“You really didn’t know?”

“No.”

Claire looked away.

“She told me you two belonged together.”

Daniel’s stomach turned.

“I told her to leave.”

“But she came back?”

Claire nodded.

“At the party.”

“What was on the flash drive?”

“Everything.”

Bank records.

Fake contracts.

Emails.

Transaction logs.

Enough evidence to expose the theft.

Daniel stood.

“Then Vanessa pushed you because she wanted that drive.”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan watched.”

Claire didn’t answer.

Daniel knew why.

Because the truth was worse.

His brother hadn’t called for help.

He had watched Claire fall.

Then disappeared.

Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

For several seconds there was silence.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Danny.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“You watched Vanessa push Claire.”

“I know.”

“You stood there.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t help her.”

“I couldn’t.”

Daniel nearly shouted.

“You couldn’t?”

Claire watched him.

Ethan’s voice cracked.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.”

“Then explain it.”

“I can’t over the phone.”

“Where are you?”

Silence.

Then Ethan whispered.

“Vanessa isn’t the one you should be afraid of.”

Daniel stopped.

“What does that mean?”

“She was trying to get the drive for someone else.”

“Who?”

A sound came through the phone.

A car door.

Then Ethan suddenly whispered.

“Oh, God.”

“What?”

May you like

“They found me.”

The line went dead.
