Chapter 14 - WHAT THE CAMERA REALLY CAUGHT
Ethan had known Charles was alive for nearly a year.
Charles contacted him secretly.
At first, Ethan believed his father wanted reconciliation.
Then Charles asked him to move money.
Ethan refused.
That was when Charles revealed the Red Harbor documents.
“Help me,” Charles told him, “or everything becomes yours.”
Ethan became trapped.
He began secretly collecting evidence.
Claire discovered the same transactions independently.
That was why Ethan never told her.
He feared Charles would hurt her.
But on the night of the charity dinner, Ethan made a decision.
He would meet Charles at the mansion.
He would record a confession.
That was why Charles stood above the staircase.
Ethan had arranged to meet him in the old study.
Vanessa arrived unexpectedly.
She wanted Claire’s flash drive.
Their argument began.
Charles watched.
He could have stopped it.
He could have called for help.
Instead, he stood behind the railing.
When Vanessa shoved Claire, Charles saw an opportunity.
He went directly to the security room.
He attacked Owen.
Then he used Claire’s stolen login credentials to delete the footage.
But he made one mistake.
The camera had a secondary internal memory.
That memory preserved the missing three minutes.
And there was more.
Owen recovered audio.
Everyone gathered in the foyer when he played it.
Claire appeared on screen.
Vanessa followed.
“Give me the drive,” Vanessa said.
“No.”
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“I understand exactly what I’m doing.”
“You’ll destroy Daniel’s family.”
Claire stared at her.
“No, Vanessa.”
She held up the drive.
“His family already destroyed itself.”
Vanessa grabbed her wrist.
“Give it to me.”
“Let go.”
“You always thought you were better than me.”
“This isn’t about you.”
“It was always about me!”
Claire pulled away.
Vanessa shoved her.
Claire fell.
Then came the detail nobody had heard before.
Charles stepped into view.
Vanessa looked up.
Her face filled with horror.
“You said you weren’t coming.”
Charles walked down the staircase.
He looked at Claire.
She was conscious.
Barely.
She whispered.
“Help me.”
Charles crouched beside her.
For one terrible second, Daniel believed his father might actually help.
Instead, Charles reached into Claire’s purse.
He removed her phone.
Then he stood.
Vanessa stared at him.
“She needs an ambulance.”
Charles answered calmly.
“No.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?”
“If she dies, the investigation dies with her.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
That was the unbelievable truth the camera had captured.
Vanessa had pushed Claire.
But Charles had deliberately chosen to leave her there to die.
Then footsteps sounded from another room.
Daniel was coming.
Charles ran upstairs.
Vanessa panicked.
And seconds later, Daniel entered the foyer.
The camera had not simply captured an assault.
