CHAPTER 2: THE SON WHO FINALLY CHOSE HIS FAMILY

The nursery remained silent except for the baby's frightened cries.

Ethan never looked away from his mother.

His body stayed firmly between Emma and Margaret, one arm wrapped protectively around his trembling wife while the other rested on the crib, gently rocking it.

"Get out."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

Far more terrifying than shouting.

Margaret blinked in disbelief.

"What did you just say?"

"I said..." Ethan slowly stood to his full height. "...get out of my house."

A sharp laugh escaped Margaret's lips.

"You would throw your own mother out because of her?"

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"No."

He took one deliberate step forward.

"I'm throwing you out because you assaulted my wife."

Margaret's confident expression cracked.

"I was disciplining her."

"You slapped her."

Silence.

"You dragged her across the floor."

Another silence.

"You terrified my daughter."

The baby's crying echoed through the room like a verdict.

Margaret glanced toward the crib, but Ethan immediately stepped sideways, blocking her view.

"You don't get to go near her."

The words landed harder than any slap.

"You can't keep my granddaughter from me."

"I can."

"And I will."

Emma stared at her husband through tear-filled eyes.

For months...

He had asked her to "be patient."

To "ignore Mom."

To "keep the peace."

Not anymore.

Margaret pointed a shaking finger at Emma.

"She's manipulating you!"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

His eyes never left his mother's.

"I finally stopped letting you manipulate me."

Margaret's face turned white.

She had controlled every important decision in Ethan's life since he was a child.

His school.

His career.

His friends.

Even his wedding.

But today...

That control ended.

"I'll give you one minute," Ethan said quietly.

"If you're still standing in this room after that..."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

"...I'm calling the police."

Margaret's mouth fell open.

"You would have your own mother arrested?"

"If that's what it takes to protect my wife."

For the first time in decades...

Margaret realized she had lost her son.

Without another word, she picked up her purse and walked out.

The front door slammed hard enough to shake the pictures on the wall.

Only then did Ethan collapse beside Emma.

"I'm sorry."

His voice broke.

"I should have stopped this a long time ago."

Emma wrapped her arms around him as both of them listened to their daughter slowly stop crying.

For the first time since becoming parents...

They truly felt like a family.
