Chapter 6 - The Trap Snaps

At 4:30 PM, three unmarked black Chevrolet Suburbans rolled silently past the wrought-iron perimeter gates of the Mercer estate.

The heavy rain had returned, slicking the long, tree-lined driveway. Dominic Mercer stood at the top of the sweeping stone steps in front of the main entrance, his hands buried deep in the pockets of his dark charcoal suit. Behind him, standing inside the grand foyer, were Frank and two corporate attorneys carrying pristine leather briefcases.

The SUV doors slammed open. Six federal agents in tactical windbreakers stepped out into the downpour, led by Special Agent Morrison—a veteran investigator with a reputation for merciless thoroughness—and flanked by Arthur Harrington and Brooke.

Brooke had changed into a tailored charcoal skirt suit, her makeup reapplied, her chin tilted high with unmistakable triumph.

“Dominic Mercer!” Agent Morrison called out, flashing his federal badge as he climbed the wet marble steps. “I have a federal search and seizure warrant issued by the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island, regarding systemic customs fraud, illegal maritime smuggling, and money laundering at Pier 19.”

Dominic didn't flinch. His expression remained as calm and immovable as the granite cliffs below.

“Agent Morrison,” Dominic said smoothly. “Welcome to Newport. You’re welcome to execute your warrant, though I believe you’ll find our records entirely in order.”

Arthur Harrington stepped forward, a smug, venomous grin spreading across his wrinkled face. “Save the cool act for the magistrate, Dominic. We delivered your entire private ledger from the study safe to Morrison’s team two hours ago. Every shipment, every container ID, every offshore wire routing.”

Brooke stepped up beside her father, leaning in toward Dominic with a triumphant whisper. “I told you, Dominic. You should have signed the deeds.”

Dominic didn't even glance at her. He looked directly at Agent Morrison.

“Agent Morrison,” Dominic said evenly, “have your forensic data analysts completed their digital source tracing on the manifest flash drive Mr. Harrington provided?”

Morrison paused, his radio earpiece suddenly crackling with static. “Agent Morrison, hold the scene,” a voice squawked through the comms.

Morrison tapped his earpiece, frowning deeply. “Morrison here. What is it, tech team?”

The federal investigator listened for ten solid seconds. As the words came through the earpiece, the color slowly drained from Morrison’s face. His stern, aggressive posture dissolved into rigid shock.

“Are you certain?” Morrison whispered into his microphone. “Run the hash codes again.”

A beat of silence passed, filled only by the roar of the Atlantic rain against the estate’s slate roof.

“Confirmed,” the radio voice crackled. “The digital signatures on every falsified customs declaration originate from the IP address and private security token of Harrington & Associates Law Firm, Thames Street. Furthermore, the offshore routing accounts referenced in the fraudulent shipping logs aren't owned by Mercer Maritime—they are registered directly to Harrington Horizon Holdings, an entity owned by Brooke Harrington.”

Arthur’s smug smile froze. “What? That’s… that’s impossible! Check the server logs again!”

Dominic took a single, slow step down the stone stairs, his eyes locking onto Arthur like a pair of iron vices.

“Did you really believe I left the master keys to my harbor logistics in a wall safe behind an oil painting, Arthur?” Dominic’s voice cut through the storm like a sharpened blade. “For eighteen months, your daughter searched my house for leverage. Every file she copied, every ledger she downloaded, was embedded with a cryptographic watermark registered to your firm’s private server.”

Brooke gasped, her eyes flying wide in absolute terror. “No… no, Dominic, you set us up!”

“You set yourself up,” Dominic said coldly. “You stole proprietary data from my home, modified customs manifests to extort my family’s trust, and handed federal authorities documented evidence of your own firm’s multi-million-dollar wire fraud and tax evasion.”

Agent Morrison turned slowly toward Arthur Harrington and Brooke.

“Arthur Harrington. Brooke Harrington,” Morrison said, his voice dropping all professional courtesy as four federal agents immediately unclipped their cuffs from their duty belts. “You are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, falsification of federal customs manifests, and extortion under Title 18 of the United States Code.”

“Get your hands off me!” Brooke screamed as two agents grabbed her arms, forcing her wrists behind her back. “Dominic! Tell them! Dad, do something!”

Arthur Harrington began hyperventilating, his knees trembling as the cold steel handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists. “Dominic… please. We can settle this! Catherine wouldn't have wanted this!”

“Do not speak my mother’s name,” Dominic commanded, his voice dropping into lethal ice.

As the federal agents pushed the screaming heiress and her disgraced father into the back of the black Suburbans, the side door to the estate’s covered veranda swung open.

Natalie stood there, holding an umbrella over Noah.

Noah looked down at the driveway, watching Brooke get shoved into the police vehicle, her designer heels splashing through the dirty mud. The boy looked up at his mother, then across the rain-swept courtyard to Dominic.

Dominic walked down the steps, knelt in the wet gravel before Noah, and pulled a small, silver brass key from his pocket.

“This is the front door key to Grandma Catherine’s cottage, Noah,” Dominic said softly, pressing the cold metal into the boy’s palm and closing his small fingers around it. “It belongs to you and your mother. Forever.”

Noah’s eyes shone with quiet wonder as he wrapped his arms tightly around his uncle’s neck. Natalie wiped a tear from her cheek and smiled—a true, unbroken smile for the first time in six months.

The heavy iron gates of the Mercer estate swung shut behind the departing federal convoy, sealing the family ground in absolute peace as the storm clouds over the Atlantic finally broke, letting the evening sun flood the cliffside in brilliant, golden light.
