Chapter 10 - The Key to the Cottage

By noon, the news of the Harrington family's arrest had detonated across the Northeast.
Every major news outlet from Boston to New York carried front-page headlines detailing the multi-million-dollar maritime scandal, the murder-for-hire indictment, and the total collapse of one of Rhode Island's oldest legal dynasties. The society wedding of the decade was officially erased from the public registry.
Down on the eastern edge of the Mercer property, the old Victorian cottage stood among towering pine trees, overlooking a secluded cove.
Emma walked down the stone path carrying a basket of fresh linens and warm bread, accompanied by Frank, who carried two large storage trunks filled with Catherine Mercer’s antique heirlooms.
On the front porch, Noah was running across the polished cedar planks, his laughter ringing out in the crisp autumn air. For the first time in six months, the boy’s shoulders weren't hunched with fear.
Dominic stood by the porch steps, watching his nephew inspect the brass key in his small hand.
"Does this fit the big front door, Uncle Dom?" Noah called out, holding up the silver-brass key.
"Try it and see, buddy," Dominic smiled.
Noah ran to the heavy oak door, carefully sliding the key into the antique lock. With a firm turn of his wrist, the heavy brass mechanism clicked smoothly, and the door swung wide open, revealing the warm, sunlit interior filled with Catherine’s favorite books, a stone hearth, and panoramic views of the open ocean.
"Mommy! Look! It opened!" Noah cheered, darting inside to explore the sunroom.

Natalie stood at the threshold, looking back at her brother with eyes full of peace. "It feels like home again, Dom."
"It always was," Dominic replied. "And it always will be."
