She Whispered “Daddy, Take Me Home” — Then He Saw The Mark
The lights of the fair glowed behind them, but the little girl didn’t seem to notice any of it.
She sat quietly in the open passenger seat of the old brown car, her dirty dress wrinkled, her knees covered in dust, and tears running down her trembling cheeks.
“Daddy…” she whispered. “Can we just go home, please?”
Her father leaned against the open door, his expression tightening with concern.
“What happened, baby?”
She glanced over her shoulder toward the fairgrounds.
The music was still playing.
Families were still laughing.
The rides were still spinning beneath the golden evening sky, as if nothing terrible could ever happen in a place like that.
But her small hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
Her father gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Did someone scare you?”
She shook her head too quickly.
“No.”
The lie hurt him before the truth even came out.
Slowly, she climbed out of the car and stood on the sidewalk, clutching the front of her torn dress with both hands.
“I need to show you something,” she whispered, barely able to breathe.
“But please… don’t get angry.”
His face softened instantly.
“Angry at you?”
She lowered her eyes.
“I didn’t want to ruin your day…”
Then, with shaking fingers, she turned around and carefully pulled the ripped fabric away from her shoulder.
Her father froze.
The smile disappeared from his face.
