Chapter 6 - My Mother’s Recording

Police searched the cabin.
No body.
No Michael.
No vehicle.
No neighbors had seen anything.
Daniel and I sat inside the local sheriff’s office while investigators examined the flash drive.
Most of it was encrypted.
One video file wasn’t.
The timestamp was twenty-eight years old.
A woman appeared on screen.
My mother.
Young.
Pregnant.
Terrified.
I covered my mouth.
“Emily,” she said to the camera.
I broke.
Daniel moved closer but didn’t touch me.
My mother continued.
“If you’re seeing this, then something went wrong.”
She looked over her shoulder.
“I need you to know that your father loved you before you were born.”
Tears blurred the screen.
“He did not abandon us.”
I squeezed my eyes shut.
“He tried to protect us.”
Then her expression hardened.
“Charles Whitmore and Robert Caldwell stole more than twelve million dollars from the foundation.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“But there was another person.”
I looked at him.
Laura continued.
“Someone inside the Whitmore family approved transfers whenever Charles needed access.”
My heartbeat accelerated.
“Margaret knows who.”
The video glitched.
Then my mother leaned closer to the camera.
“Margaret helped us escape, but I don’t know why she later betrayed Michael.”
Daniel looked at me.
So Michael’s note wasn’t entirely wrong.
My mother had distrusted Margaret too.
Laura continued.
“The ledger proves everything. Names. Dates. Account numbers.”
Then she held up a tiny brass key.
The same key I had carried for eighteen years.
“The key opens more than one lock.”
I whispered, “What does that mean?”
On screen, my mother smiled sadly.
“Emily, if I cannot give this to you myself, I’m sorry.”
The image froze.
Then returned for three final seconds.
“Find the blue room.”
The video ended.
Daniel frowned.
“What blue room?”
I already knew.
“There’s one in the mansion.”
He looked at me.
“The old nursery.”
Margaret had kept it locked for years.
Nobody was allowed inside.
We drove back to New York that night.
When we entered the mansion, Margaret was waiting.
I walked straight toward her.
“What’s in the blue room?”
Her face changed.
“Who told you that?”
“My mother.”
Margaret whispered, “You found the recording.”
“You knew it existed?”
“No.”
“Where is Michael?”
“I don’t know.”
“You accused him of theft.”
“To keep him alive.”
I laughed bitterly.
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
“Then explain it now.”
Before she could answer, Daniel opened the blue room.
Dust covered everything.
Faded wallpaper.
Old furniture.
A wooden rocking horse.
A crib.
I stared at it.
“Whose nursery was this?”
Margaret didn’t answer.
Daniel slowly turned.
“Mom?”
Her eyes filled.
“Yours.”
He frowned.
“No. My nursery was upstairs.”
“This was before that.”
Daniel walked farther inside.
A portrait hung crookedly on the wall.
Behind it was a small brass keyhole.
I inserted my mother’s key.
Click.
A hidden panel opened.
Inside was a stack of letters.
Daniel picked up the first one.
The envelope said:
FOR DANIEL — FROM LAURA.
He looked at me.
Then opened it.
His face changed after the first paragraph.
“What?” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.”
He lifted his eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your mother says I’m the reason she couldn’t leave.”
