Chapter 12 - The Woman Robert Feared

Federal agents intercepted the SUV three blocks away.

Robert Caldwell wasn’t inside.

The driver was.

A woman in her late sixties.

When agents brought her back, Margaret gasped.

“Eleanor?”

The woman smiled tiredly.

“Hello, Margaret.”

Vanessa stared.

“Mom?”

Eleanor Caldwell.

Vanessa’s mother.

The woman who had supposedly been living in Europe for five years.

She looked at her daughter.

“I’m sorry.”

Vanessa backed away.

“You took the ledger?”

“Yes.”

“For Dad?”

“No.”

Eleanor looked at me.

“For Laura.”

I didn’t understand.

Eleanor explained.

She and my mother had secretly stayed in contact.

After Laura survived the first sabotage attempt, Eleanor began helping her.

“Why?”

“Because I knew what Robert was.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You stayed married to him.”

“Yes.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“It’s an admission of cowardice.”

That silenced Vanessa.

Eleanor opened her coat.

The ledger was strapped beneath it in a plastic evidence pouch.

My breath caught.

She had it.

The original.

Decades of handwriting.

Transfers.

Names.

Signatures.

Daniel whispered, “Why take it from the grave now?”

“Because Robert called me yesterday.”

Eleanor looked at Vanessa.

“He knew Vanessa had failed.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“What did he say?”

“That he was cleaning up.”

“And that means?”

Eleanor stared at me.

“Michael first.”

Then Margaret.

“Then you.”

She looked at Daniel.

“And him.”

Finally Vanessa.

“And me.”

Nobody spoke.

Eleanor handed the ledger to the FBI.

“Robert doesn’t want the money anymore.”

“What does he want?” I asked.

“To erase everyone who can connect him to it.”

My phone rang.

Margaret answered hers at the same time.

Then Daniel’s.

Three phones.

Three different calls.

All from Whitmore Development employees.

Daniel answered first.

“What?”

His expression changed.

“When?”

He ended the call.

“What happened?” I asked.

He looked at Margaret.

“Federal agents are at headquarters.”

Margaret went pale.

“Why?”

“They found forged foundation documents in my office.”

Vanessa whispered, “Robert.”

Daniel nodded.

“He’s framing me now.”

Eleanor’s phone buzzed.

A text.

She read it and went white.

“What?” Vanessa asked.

Eleanor handed me the screen.

A photograph.

Robert Caldwell.

Standing inside the Whitmore mansion.

Behind him was Margaret’s personal safe.

His message read:

You found the ledger. I found Laura’s final recording.

Another message appeared.

Come alone, Emily.

Then a third.

Or I burn it.

Daniel shook his head immediately.

“No.”

I looked at the photo.

My mother.

One final recording.

One last piece of her voice.

Maybe one final truth.

“I’m going.”

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Absolutely not.”

“He wants me.”

“He wants everyone dead.”

“I know.”

“Then why would you walk into that?”

I met his eyes.

“Because for twenty-nine years, everyone else has decided what I’m allowed to know about my own life.”

May you like

I looked back at Robert’s message.

“That ends tonight.”
