Chapter 10 - The Arrest

They arrested me in the foyer.
The same foyer where Vanessa had framed me with the necklace.
My wrists were cuffed beneath the same chandelier.
Only this time there were no guests.
Just Daniel.
Margaret.
Vanessa hiding upstairs.
And Detective Warren Briggs.
He was tall, gray-haired, and almost apologetic.
“Emily Carter, you are under arrest on suspicion of wire fraud, identity fraud, and conspiracy to commit charitable embezzlement.”
“This is a setup.”
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“She was with me all day.”
Briggs nodded.
“The transfers trace back months.”
“They’re fabricated.”
“Then her attorney can prove that.”
I looked at his face.
Something felt wrong.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
Vanessa’s warning rang in my head.
Robert had someone inside the police department.
I looked at Briggs.
“Did Robert Caldwell send you?”
His eyes snapped toward me.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Daniel saw it too.
Briggs immediately grabbed my arm.
“Let’s go.”
Daniel blocked him.
“Get your hand off her.”
“Sir.”
“You heard me.”
Other officers stepped forward.
I didn’t want Daniel arrested too.
“I’m okay.”
He looked at me.
“No, you’re not.”
“I will be.”
I leaned closer.
“Find my father.”
Briggs pulled me toward the door.
As we passed the security camera, Daniel’s eyes lifted toward it.
Then toward me.
I understood.
Record everything.
At the station I was placed in an interview room.
No attorney.
No phone call for forty minutes.
Briggs entered alone.
He set a folder on the table.
“You’re in serious trouble.”
“I want a lawyer.”
“You’ll get one.”
“Then we’re done.”
He sat anyway.
“You work for rich people. You know how this goes.”
I stared at him.
“No. Tell me.”
“They protect themselves.”
“Is that what Robert told you?”
His jaw tightened.
I had him.
“Michael Bennett trusted the police once too,” I said.
Briggs stopped moving.
“That’s why he spent twenty-eight years hiding.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I know Robert is alive.”
His face changed.
There.
Confirmation.
I smiled.
“You just told me.”
Briggs stood.
“You should be very careful.”
“Are you threatening me on camera?”
He glanced toward the corner.
Then smiled.
“That camera hasn’t worked in months.”
Cold moved through me.
He leaned closer.
“Here’s what happens next.”
I said nothing.
“You sign a statement admitting you used information from the Whitmore Foundation to move money.”
“No.”
“You say Vanessa caught you stealing the necklace because you were preparing to flee.”
“No.”
“And in exchange, your father stays alive.”
Every muscle in my body locked.
“You have Michael?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t need to.”
He slid a confession toward me.
“Sign.”
I looked down.
Then back at him.
“No.”
He sighed.
“You’re just like Laura.”
I stopped breathing.
“You knew my mother.”
Briggs realized his mistake.
Too late.
“How?”
He stood.
“Conversation over.”
He reached for the folder.
I grabbed it first.
A photograph slipped out.
My mother.
Outside the hospital.
The night she died.
Standing beside Detective Warren Briggs.
I looked up slowly.
“You were there.”
Briggs went pale.
The door suddenly opened.
Daniel stood outside with an attorney.
And behind him was an FBI agent.
Daniel looked at Briggs.
“Step away from her.”
For the first time, Detective Briggs looked genuinely terrified.
But as they removed my cuffs, he leaned close enough to whisper:
“You think this saves you?”
I met his eyes.
May you like
He smiled.
“Ask Daniel what happened to your father twenty minutes ago.”
