CHAPTER 5 — THE EMPTY GRAVE

Hospital security sealed the maternity floor.
Police officers searched every stairwell, elevator, and service corridor.
The attacker disappeared.
He had changed clothes in a supply room and left through the loading entrance before security locked the building.
The hospital cameras captured only fragments of his face.
He had known where the cameras were.
He had known the staff schedule.
He had known Khloe’s room.
That terrified Elias more than the attack itself.
Someone inside the hospital had helped him.
Khloe was transferred to a secure private room under an alias.
Two armed officers stood outside.
Dr. Shaw personally checked every medication before it entered.
The syringe was sent to the laboratory.
The initial test confirmed the nurse’s warning.
The drug could have caused severe fetal distress and cardiac arrest.
Khloe sat upright in bed, unable to stop shaking.
“They tried to kill my baby.”
Elias stood beside the window.
“Yes.”
“Was it Marcus?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who else benefits?”
“Whoever is behind ORCHID.”
Khloe looked at him.
“My father wrote that Orchid was a person.”
“Yes.”
“Could it be my mother?”
Elias did not answer.
Khloe’s mother had died in a private clinic in Switzerland.
Khloe had been told the cancer treatments had failed.
The coffin remained closed because of what the illness had done to her body.
Khloe had never seen her after death.
She had accepted the explanation because grief had made questions feel cruel.
Now every memory seemed contaminated.
The final phone call.
Her mother’s weak voice.
Marcus holding Khloe as she cried.
Her father refusing to discuss the funeral.
Elias disappearing for three months afterward.
Khloe looked at him.
“Where were you after my mother died?”
His posture stiffened.
“You left the country.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was searching for answers.”
“You suspected she was alive?”
“I suspected the medical records were false.”
Khloe stared at him.
“And you said nothing.”
“I found no proof.”
“You keep saying that as though it makes betrayal acceptable.”
“It doesn’t.”
“Then stop deciding which truths I’m allowed to hear.”
Elias turned toward her.
“I searched clinics across Switzerland, France, and Austria. The doctor who signed Lillian’s death certificate had disappeared. The clinic had been sold. Every staff member who treated her had been paid through a private foundation connected to Senator Vale.”
Khloe felt pressure build in her chest.
“My mother was part of this.”
“I don’t know if she was a prisoner, a participant, or both.”
“But she went to my father’s house with Marcus.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“We need the rest of the video.”
“There is no rest.”
“There may be another copy.”
A detective entered.
Detective Lena Morris had questioned Marcus at the hotel.
She carried a sealed evidence folder.
“We identified the man who attacked you.”
Khloe leaned forward.
“Who is he?”
“His name is Aaron Pike.”
Elias’s eyes narrowed.
“Related to Leonard Pike?”
“His younger brother.”
Marcus’s personal attorney.
The man who had filed the forged medical amendment.
Detective Morris placed a photograph on the table.
Aaron Pike had short brown hair, a narrow face, and a small scar beneath his left eye.
“He worked as a private military contractor,” she said. “His medical training explains how he gained access and selected the drug.”
“Where is he?”
“We’re looking.”
“Is Marcus being arrested?” Khloe asked.
“We don’t yet have evidence that he ordered the hospital attack.”
“What about the hotel?”
“We have sufficient evidence to charge Isabella Vale with aggravated assault.”
“And Marcus?”
“Conspiracy is more difficult. His statements are suspicious, but his attorney claims he planned only a verbal confrontation.”
Khloe laughed bitterly.
“There’s a spreadsheet predicting how a fall would affect my legal capacity.”
Detective Morris looked at Elias.
“What spreadsheet?”
Elias handed her a printed copy.
She read the highlighted row.
Her expression sharpened.
“Where did this come from?”
“Isabella’s flash drive.”
“We need the original.”
“You’ll receive a forensic copy.”
“We need the device.”
“It also contains evidence related to Alexander Thorne’s death.”
Detective Morris looked up.
“What kind of evidence?”
“A video placing Marcus and several others at the estate.”
“Several?”
Elias paused.
“Lillian Thorne.”
The detective stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
“So we believed.”
Detective Morris sat down.
“My department will reopen the case.”
“No,” Elias said.
She looked at him.
“Excuse me?”
“Commissioner Cole appears in the video.”
Her face changed.
“Raymond Cole?”
“He supervised the original investigation.”
Detective Morris closed the folder.
“You’re saying my commissioner may have participated in evidence suppression.”
“I’m saying he was present at the house.”
She stood.
“I need to report this.”
“To whom?”
“The deputy commissioner.”
“Who was Cole’s partner for seventeen years.”
Detective Morris stopped.
Elias continued.
“You report it through normal channels, the evidence disappears again.”
The detective looked toward Khloe.
“What do you want me to do?”
Khloe thought about her father’s warning.
Trust Elias.
“Find someone outside the department.”
Detective Morris nodded slowly.
“I know an assistant U.S. attorney.”
“Call her from a secure phone,” Elias said.
Detective Morris left.
Khloe looked at the clock.
It was almost four in the morning.
The gala had ended less than six hours earlier.
It felt like another life.
Her phone remained in an evidence bag.
Elias had disabled all tracking.
A hotel tablet sat on the bedside table.
News alerts filled the screen.
BILLIONAIRE’S WIFE HOSPITALIZED AFTER PRIVATE GALA INCIDENT
SENATOR’S DAUGHTER QUESTIONED IN ASSAULT INVESTIGATION
THORNE INTERNATIONAL DELAYS MERGER ANNOUNCEMENT
Marcus had released a statement.
Khloe opened it.
My wife and unborn daughter remain my only priority. Tonight’s tragic misunderstanding has been distorted by individuals seeking to exploit a private family crisis. I ask the public to respect our privacy as we focus on healing.
Khloe read it twice.
“Tragic misunderstanding.”
Elias took the tablet.
“He’s trying to control the narrative.”
“He called us a family.”
“He needs investors to believe the marriage is stable.”
Khloe reached for the hospital phone.
“Who are you calling?”
“The company.”
“At four in the morning?”
“The board has members in Europe and Asia.”
She dialed the emergency corporate line.
After several transfers, Naomi Pierce answered.
Her voice sounded weak.
“Mrs. Thorne?”
“Naomi?”
“I’m safe.”
Khloe closed her eyes with relief.
“Where are you?”
“Federal protective custody.”
“Elias said you were trapped in the garage.”
“Someone disabled my access card. Two men tried to take me.”
“Who?”
“I recognized one. He works for Senator Vale.”
Khloe’s anger deepened.
“Tell me about the emergency board resolution.”
“They plan to vote at nine this morning.”
“On my competency?”
“Yes.”
“Can they do that without me?”
“They can try.”
“What do I need to stop it?”
“You must appear in person or by verified video and formally assert your voting rights.”
Khloe looked at the fetal monitor.
“I can’t leave the hospital.”
“We can arrange a secure video connection.”
“Do it.”
Naomi hesitated.
“There’s more.”
“Of course there is.”
“Marcus has already told the board you suffered a psychiatric episode.”
“What?”
“He says Isabella tried to calm you down and you became violent.”
“There’s video.”
“He claims the video was manipulated by Elias.”
Khloe looked at her uncle.
Marcus was attacking the evidence before it reached the board.
Naomi continued.
“He also filed a petition to have you placed under temporary guardianship.”
“Based on what?”
“The psychiatric report from Dr. Reese.”
“He never examined me.”
“I know.”
“When is the hearing?”
“Eight thirty.”
“That’s in four hours.”
“Yes.”
Khloe felt the pressure of the trap closing around her.
Marcus did not need to prove she was permanently incompetent.
He only needed control for one day.
One vote.
One signature.
One transaction.
“Send every document to Elias,” Khloe said.
“I will.”
“And arrange the video connection.”
“Yes.”
Khloe ended the call.
Elias looked at her.
“You need rest.”
“I need to stop my husband from stealing my company.”
“You also need to keep your daughter alive.”
“I can do both.”
“Khloe.”
“My father built Thorne International. Marcus turned my marriage into a weapon to take it from me.”
Her voice steadied.
“He will not get one more thing.”
At seven thirty, Dr. Shaw examined her.
The contractions had stopped.
The baby’s heart rate remained stable.
“You are not leaving this bed,” the doctor said.
“I have a court hearing.”
“You can attend remotely.”
“And a board meeting.”
“Also remotely.”
Khloe nodded.
“Then keep me conscious.”
Dr. Shaw gave her a long look.
“What happened to you was traumatic. You do not have to prove strength to anyone.”
“I’m not proving strength.”
“What are you doing?”
“Taking back control.”
At eight fifteen, a secure video system was brought into the room.
Elias stood beside her.
Naomi joined from a protected federal office.
Khloe’s attorney, Rachel Bloom, appeared from another location.
The emergency guardianship hearing began.
Marcus sat in a courtroom beside Leonard Pike.
He wore a dark suit.
Perfectly composed.
Dr. Nolan Reese testified that Khloe had demonstrated signs of paranoia, emotional instability, and impaired judgment during pregnancy.
Rachel questioned him.
“When did you examine Mrs. Thorne?”
“I reviewed extensive records.”
“That was not my question.”
“I did not examine her personally.”
“Did you speak to her?”
“No.”
“Did you obtain her consent to review her medical records?”
Dr. Reese hesitated.
“No.”
Rachel displayed the hospital report confirming that Khloe was alert, oriented, and medically competent.
Then she introduced the forged medical amendment.
Leonard Pike objected.
The judge overruled him.
Marcus remained still.
But Khloe saw his jaw tighten.
Rachel asked the court to deny the guardianship petition and refer the forged signature for criminal investigation.
The judge turned toward Khloe’s screen.
“Mrs. Thorne, do you understand these proceedings?”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
“Do you understand the financial decisions scheduled today?”
“Yes.”
“Do you believe you are capable of exercising independent judgment?”
Khloe looked directly into the camera.
“My husband arranged a confrontation designed to create a medical emergency, forged my signature, accessed my private medical records, and is now using a psychiatrist who never met me to seize control of my inheritance.”
The courtroom became silent.
“I am not confused,” Khloe continued. “I am finally seeing clearly.”
The judge denied Marcus’s petition.
He also issued an emergency protective order and referred the matter to federal prosecutors.
Marcus looked toward the camera.
Their eyes met through the screen.
His expression carried no apology.
Only warning.
At nine, the board meeting began.
Seventeen directors appeared on the secure conference system.
Marcus joined from Thorne Tower.
Khloe joined from her hospital bed.
The board chairman cleared his throat.
“In light of recent events, we must determine whether the Helix transaction can proceed.”
Khloe interrupted.
“What is Helix?”
Several board members looked uncomfortable.
Marcus answered.
“A private acquisition structure.”
“Who is the buyer?”
“That information is confidential.”
“I own thirty-one percent of this company.”
“And you delegated voting authority to me.”
“That authority is revoked.”
Marcus’s expression sharpened.
“You cannot revoke it during an active transaction.”
“My father’s trust says I can.”
Leonard Pike appeared beside Marcus.
“That clause is disputed.”
Khloe looked toward Naomi.
Naomi shared a document on the screen.
Alexander Thorne’s original trust agreement appeared.
The clause was clear.
Upon evidence of fraud, coercion, or marital misconduct, all delegated control returned immediately to Khloe.
The board chairman read it twice.
Marcus’s face hardened.
Khloe spoke.
“I hereby revoke every proxy, authorization, and voting right previously granted to Marcus Thorne.”
Several directors began whispering.
Marcus leaned toward the camera.
“Khloe, think about what you are doing.”
“I am.”
“You will collapse the deal.”
“Then reveal the buyer.”
“I cannot.”
“Why?”
“Because of binding confidentiality agreements.”
Khloe looked at the board.
“Then I vote to suspend the Helix transaction pending a full independent investigation.”
Six directors immediately supported her.
Three hesitated.
Marcus needed a majority to continue.
The chairman called for a vote.
Before the final director responded, every screen went black.
The connection failed.
Hospital lights flickered.
The fetal monitor shut off.
Khloe’s room fell into darkness.
Elias pulled out his phone.
“No signal.”
A red emergency light came on above the door.
From the hallway, Khloe heard shouting.
Then gunfire.
One shot.
Two.
Three.
Elias moved toward the door.
“Stay behind the bed.”
“What’s happening?”
He looked through the narrow glass panel.
Both officers outside Khloe’s room were lying on the floor.
A woman in a cream-colored coat stepped over them.
Dark hair framed her face.
She walked directly toward Khloe’s door.
Khloe stared through the glass.
The woman looked older than she did in the video.
But Khloe recognized her instantly.
Her mother raised one hand and pressed it against the window.
May you like
Then she whispered through the locked door:
“Khloe, Marcus knows the grave is empty.”
