CHAPTER 10 — THE MAN WHO WALKED OUT

The explosion shook three floors of the Grand Aurelia.
Windows shattered above the ballroom.
Smoke poured through the service corridors.
Emergency crews rushed into the basement.
Khloe watched the frozen body-camera feed.
No sound.
No image.
Nothing.
“Reconnect,” she said.
A technician worked quickly.
“I’m trying.”
“Reconnect!”
Lillian stood behind her.
Dr. Shaw monitored the fetal heart rate.
Khloe’s contractions returned.
She ignored them.
The video flickered.
Smoke.
Broken concrete.
A federal agent crawling near the vault entrance.
Then Elias appeared.
His face was covered in blood.
He dragged someone through the debris.
Khloe leaned closer.
“Who is that?”
The camera shifted.
Marcus.
Alive.
Barely.
Elias had gone back for him.
Emergency crews carried both men out.
Senator Vale remained trapped inside the sealed section of the vault.
He was later found alive beneath a collapsed steel panel, severely injured but conscious.
The thermite system destroyed several servers.
But not all.
Marcus had redirected the purge before opening Elias’s door.
He saved a mirrored copy of the central archive.
Whether he did it for Khloe, for himself, or to finally defeat Adrian Vale, no one could know.
At the hospital, Khloe’s pain intensified.
Dr. Shaw checked the monitor.
“We need to stop the connection.”
“No.”
“Your contractions are three minutes apart.”
Khloe looked at her.
“Is the baby in danger?”
“Not yet.”
“Then keep the feed on.”
Marcus arrived at the same hospital under federal guard.
He had burns along his left arm and a fractured rib.
Elias suffered a concussion and deep cuts but remained conscious.
Senator Vale was placed in surgery.
By midnight, federal prosecutors had secured the surviving servers.
Commissioner Cole was arrested while attempting to board a private plane.
Leonard Pike agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection.
Dr. Reese disappeared.
Aaron Pike remained at large.
The network had been damaged.
Not destroyed.
Khloe received a message from Marcus’s hospital room.
Please let me see you once.
Elias opposed it.
Lillian opposed it.
Dr. Shaw opposed anything that increased stress.
Khloe said yes.
Marcus entered in a wheelchair.
Two federal agents remained outside.
His left arm was bandaged.
A cut ran across his forehead.
For the first time since Khloe had known him, he looked powerless.
He stopped several feet from her bed.
Khloe did not invite him closer.
Marcus looked at the fetal monitor.
“She’s still okay?”
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes with relief.
Khloe watched him carefully.
“Did you order the hospital attack?”
“No.”
“Did you know about it?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“My father.”
“Vale?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To create permanent medical incapacity.”
Khloe felt cold.
“He wanted me dead.”
“He wanted the baby dead.”
The words cut deeper.
“Why?”
Marcus looked toward her stomach.
“Because the trust transfers your shares to your child if you die.”
“And?”
“The child’s guardian would control them.”
Khloe understood.
Marcus.
The forged medical authority.
The emergency planning.
If Khloe died but the baby lived, Marcus would gain control as father.
But if both died, the shares passed to another branch of the family trust.
“Who inherits if both of us die?”
Marcus looked at Lillian.
“You.”
Lillian went still.
Khloe stared at her mother.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
Marcus continued.
“Vale believed he could control Lillian through the archive.”
The plan had layers.
Injury if possible.
Death if necessary.
Control whoever survived.
Khloe looked back at Marcus.
“Did you plan for me to fall?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Isabella would push me?”
“I told her to confront you near the table.”
“Why?”
“To create a visible injury without serious harm.”
Khloe laughed in disbelief.
“You thought you could control the exact way a pregnant woman fell?”
“I thought you would step back.”
“You used me as a variable in a financial model.”
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
The honesty was almost worse than another lie.
“Why did you marry me?”
“At first?”
“Yes.”
“To enter the Thorne family.”
“And later?”
Marcus looked at her.
“I loved you.”
“You tried to destroy me.”
“I convinced myself I was protecting the future.”
“Whose future?”
“Mine.”
Khloe nodded slowly.
That was the most truthful answer he had ever given.
“Did you know my mother was alive?”
“For years.”
“And you never told me.”
“No.”
“Did you know who she was to you?”
“Yes.”
Khloe’s eyes burned.
“You married your half-sister?”
Marcus’s face twisted.
“No.”
Lillian stepped forward.
“What?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Khloe is not your biological daughter.”
The room became silent.
Khloe stared at him.
“What did you say?”
Marcus looked exhausted.
“Alexander was your father. But Lillian was not your biological mother.”
Khloe turned toward Lillian.
Her mother’s face had gone white.
“Is that true?”
Lillian’s lips trembled.
“Yes.”
Khloe felt as though another floor had collapsed beneath her.
“Who was my mother?”
Lillian sat down.
“Her name was Evelyn Mercer.”
“My aunt?”
“My younger sister.”
Khloe remembered the name only vaguely.
Evelyn had died in a car accident when Khloe was an infant.
“That was a lie too?”
“Yes.”
Lillian’s voice broke.
“Evelyn became pregnant while working inside the Vale Foundation. She wanted to expose them. She gave birth to you in secret.”
“Who was my biological father?”
“Alexander.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
Her father was still her father.
At least one truth remained.
“Why did you raise me?”
“Evelyn disappeared.”
“Disappeared?”
“She was taken.”
“By Vale?”
“Yes.”
“Is she dead?”
Lillian could not answer.
Marcus did.
“No.”
Khloe looked at him.
“You know where she is?”
“I know where she was kept.”
Lillian stood.
“Where?”
“A private facility in Maine.”
“When?”
“Until two years ago.”
Khloe’s pulse quickened.
“What happened two years ago?”
“She escaped.”
Lillian stared at Marcus.
“You knew this?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because she took something.”
“The archive?”
“No.”
Marcus looked at Khloe.
“She took a child.”
Khloe’s hand moved instinctively over her stomach.
“What child?”
Marcus hesitated.
“A girl from the identity program.”
“How old?”
“About six.”
“Why does that matter?”
“Because her genetic file matches Alexander Thorne.”
Khloe stared at him.
“That is impossible.”
Marcus looked toward Lillian.
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“It means Alexander had another daughter.”
Khloe’s mind raced.
A child.
Six years old.
Born around the time her father died.
“Who is the mother?”
Marcus looked at Lillian.
“Evelyn.”
Khloe felt the air leave her lungs.
Her biological mother had survived.
And years after Khloe’s birth, she had another daughter with Alexander.
A little girl.
Khloe’s sister.
“Where is she now?” Khloe asked.
“I don’t know.”
“Then why tell me?”
“Because Aaron Pike knows.”
The man who tried to kill her baby.
Marcus continued.
“He was assigned to find Evelyn and the child.”
“Did he?”
“He found their location three days ago.”
Khloe’s blood turned cold.
“Where?”
Marcus looked toward the federal agents outside.
“He sent me one message before the gala.”
“What did it say?”
Marcus met Khloe’s eyes.
“He said the child was already inside the hotel.”
Khloe remembered the gala.
Hundreds of guests.
Staff.
Musicians.
Families connected to donors.
She thought of a small girl she had seen near the ballroom entrance.
A child in a pale blue dress.
Alone.
Watching Khloe.
At the time, Khloe assumed she belonged to one of the guests.
The girl had disappeared moments before Isabella approached.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought she was being used to distract you.”
“Was she?”
“I don’t know.”
A nurse entered suddenly.
“Mrs. Thorne, your contractions are increasing.”
Dr. Shaw checked the monitor.
The baby’s heart rate began dropping.
Khloe gripped the bed rail.
Pain tightened across her abdomen.
Dr. Shaw called for the operating team.
Marcus tried to stand.
Federal agents blocked him.
Khloe looked at him through the pain.
“Find the girl.”
Marcus stared at her.
“You want me to help?”
“I want you to do one decent thing without expecting forgiveness.”
The bed began moving toward surgery.
Lillian walked beside her.
Elias followed despite his injuries.
Marcus remained in the hallway under guard.
As the operating-room doors closed, a television above the nurses’ station switched to breaking news.
Security footage from the Grand Aurelia appeared.
It showed the little girl in the pale blue dress entering an elevator with Aaron Pike.
The timestamp was ten minutes after Khloe left the hotel.
The elevator descended to the underground garage.
Aaron looked directly into the camera.
Then he held up a handwritten message.
Khloe saw it before the doors closed.
STOP THE PROSECUTION OR THE CHILD DIES.
Dr. Shaw pushed the bed into the operating room.
Khloe screamed as another contraction struck.
The doctor looked at the monitor.
“We cannot delay any longer.”
Khloe grabbed Lillian’s hand.
“Find my sister.”
Lillian leaned close.
“I will.”
The surgical team moved into position.
An anesthesiologist placed a mask over Khloe’s face.

The last thing she heard before the medication pulled her under was Dr. Shaw’s urgent voice.
“Emergency delivery. Now.”
