CHAPTER 1 — THE MAN IN THE GRAY SUIT

The private suite remained frozen in silence.

Khloe stood beside the marble table, one hand pressed against the edge for support, the other wrapped protectively around her stomach.

Pain spread through her lower back.

Her knees trembled.

She could hear her own breathing, thin and uneven, beneath the soft classical music still playing through the ceiling speakers.

No one had bothered to turn it off.

Isabella remained several feet away, wearing the expression of a frightened victim.

Her red silk gown was flawless.

Her hair had not moved out of place.

Only her breathing betrayed her.

Marcus finally stepped forward.

“Khloe,” he said carefully. “Tell me what happened.”

Khloe stared at him.

The question hurt more than the fall.

He had seen enough.

He had watched Isabella charge at her.

He had watched Khloe hit the table.

Yet he was asking as though both women had equal responsibility.

Isabella covered her mouth with one hand.

“She came at me,” she whispered. “I tried to defend myself.”

Khloe’s face went cold.

“You pushed me.”

“I barely touched you.”

“You used both hands.”

“I was scared.”

Khloe looked toward the other guests.

There were eleven people in the suite.

Executives.

Donors.

Political advisers.

Two board members from Thorne International.

Every one of them had witnessed the attack.

And every one of them suddenly found the carpet fascinating.

Khloe’s voice shook.

“Did anyone see what happened?”

No one answered.

A woman in a silver dress lowered her champagne glass.

A senior banker turned toward the window.

One of Marcus’s business partners cleared his throat and studied his phone.

Khloe felt something inside her break.

Not because they were confused.

Because they were calculating.

They were deciding which woman was more dangerous to contradict.

Isabella was the daughter of Senator Adrian Vale.

Marcus controlled Thorne International.

Khloe was pregnant, shaken, and alone.

The room had already chosen its safest version of the truth.

Then the suite door opened.

A tall man in a charcoal-gray suit stepped inside.

He looked to be in his late fifties, with neatly combed silver hair and the calm posture of someone accustomed to entering rooms where powerful people believed they were untouchable.

A gold hotel badge was pinned discreetly to his lapel.

ELIAS HARROW
DIRECTOR OF PRIVATE SECURITY

Khloe stared at him.

“Uncle Elias?”

Every head turned.

Marcus’s expression changed instantly.

Isabella’s false tears stopped.

Elias Harrow crossed the room without looking at anyone else.

He went directly to Khloe.

His eyes moved over her wrinkled dress, the shattered glass, and the red mark forming across her shoulder.

Then he looked down at her stomach.

“Are you bleeding?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Any sharp pain?”

“My back hurts.”

Elias’s jaw tightened.

He removed his jacket and placed it around her shoulders.

“Sit down.”

“I’m okay.”

“That wasn’t a request.”

His tone was controlled, but Khloe recognized the anger beneath it.

Elias had spent twenty-five years protecting diplomats, judges, corporate executives, and foreign dignitaries.

He rarely raised his voice.

He did not need to.

Two hotel security officers appeared behind him.

Elias pointed toward the guests.

“No one leaves.”

Marcus stiffened.

“Elias, that’s unnecessary.”

Elias turned slowly.

“Your pregnant wife was assaulted inside a restricted hotel suite.”

“We don’t know exactly what happened.”

“I do.”

Isabella’s face lost color.

Elias glanced toward the black glass dome mounted above the fireplace.

A tiny green light blinked beneath it.

Then he looked toward a second camera near the balcony doors.

And a third hidden inside the decorative wall panel beside the private bar.

“This suite is covered by three cameras,” he said. “All recording continuously.”

The silence changed.

It was no longer uncertainty.

It was fear.

Isabella’s eyes moved toward Marcus.

Marcus did not look at her.

Elias spoke to one of the officers.

“Secure the digital footage. Make three copies. One goes to hotel legal. One goes to the police. One stays with me.”

The officer nodded and stepped into the hallway.

Isabella moved forward.

“There’s no need to involve the police.”

Elias looked at her.

“That decision belongs to the victim.”

“She attacked me first.”

“Then the footage will protect you.”

Isabella opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Khloe sank onto a velvet chair.

The pain in her back was worsening.

She pressed both palms against her stomach.

Her baby had been active throughout the gala.

Now there was nothing.

No kick.

No movement.

Only stillness.

Her breath caught.

“Elias.”

He turned immediately.

“The baby isn’t moving.”

The anger vanished from his face.

He crouched in front of her.

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

Marcus took a step closer.

“What do you mean?”

Khloe ignored him.

Her voice became smaller.

“She was moving before the attack.”

Elias reached for the radio at his belt.

“Medical team to Suite 1902. Pregnant female, seven months, blunt-force impact and decreased fetal movement.”

Marcus looked around as though he had suddenly realized the situation was larger than his reputation.

“Call my doctor.”

“I already called the hotel emergency team,” Elias said.

“I want Dr. Keller.”

“Then call him yourself.”

Marcus pulled out his phone.

His hands were shaking.

Isabella moved closer to the door.

One of the security officers blocked her path.

“I need air,” she said.

“You need to stay inside,” Elias replied.

“This is ridiculous.”

“No. Pushing a pregnant woman into a marble table was ridiculous.”

Several guests looked up sharply.

Elias had said it as a fact.

Not an accusation.

Isabella’s lips parted.

“You haven’t seen the footage.”

“I saw the live security feed from the operations room.”

Khloe looked at him.

Elias held her gaze.

“I saw everything.”

The color drained from Isabella’s face.

Marcus stopped dialing.

For the first time since the attack, he looked directly at Isabella.

Not with concern.

Not with confusion.

With calculation.

Isabella noticed.

Her expression hardened.

“You told me there were no cameras in this suite.”

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Everyone heard.

Marcus went still.

Khloe felt the room tilt.

Elias rose slowly.

“What did you just say?”

Isabella stared at Marcus.

Marcus’s eyes flashed with warning.

She realized her mistake.

“I meant…” Her voice faltered. “Marcus said the suite was private.”

Khloe turned toward her husband.

“Why were you discussing the cameras with her?”

“We weren’t.”

“She just said you told her there weren’t any.”

“She’s upset.”

Isabella laughed once, bitterly.

“Don’t do that.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Be quiet.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t get to tell me to be quiet after everything you promised.”

Khloe’s hand tightened around the arm of the chair.

“What did he promise?”

Neither answered.

The medical team rushed into the suite before Khloe could ask again.

A paramedic knelt beside her.

“Mrs. Thorne, I need to check your blood pressure and listen for the baby’s heartbeat.”

Khloe nodded.

The paramedic wrapped a cuff around her arm.

A second medic placed a portable fetal monitor against her stomach.

Everyone waited.

Static filled the small speaker.

The medic adjusted the sensor.

More static.

Khloe’s throat closed.

“Why can’t you hear anything?”

“We’re finding the position.”

The medic moved the device again.

A faint rapid rhythm finally filled the room.

Khloe released a broken breath.

The baby’s heartbeat was there.

Fast.

Too fast.

The paramedic’s expression remained serious.

“We need to take you to the hospital immediately.”

Marcus moved beside the chair.

“I’m coming with her.”

Khloe looked up at him.

“No.”

His face changed.

“Khloe.”

“No.”

“This is my child.”

“And I am your wife.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

The words landed between them.

Marcus glanced toward the guests.

He was aware of every pair of eyes watching.

His voice lowered.

“We can discuss this later.”

Khloe almost laughed.

He still thought this was about timing.

Image.

Privacy.

Damage control.

Elias helped her stand.

The moment she put weight on her right leg, pain shot through her abdomen.

She gasped and bent forward.

Marcus reached for her.

Elias stepped between them.

“Don’t touch her.”

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“She’s my wife.”

“Then perhaps you should have protected her.”

The medics guided Khloe toward a stretcher waiting outside.

As she passed Isabella, the woman’s face shifted.

For one second, the fear disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

She leaned close enough that only Khloe could hear.

“You think the cameras saved you?”

Khloe stopped.

Isabella’s smile was almost invisible.

“They’re going to destroy him too.”

Khloe stared at her.

Before she could respond, Elias pulled her forward.

The hallway doors closed behind them.

Inside the suite, Marcus turned on Isabella.

“What did you say to her?”

Isabella folded her arms.

“The truth.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“You were supposed to scare her.”

A board member near the window looked up.

Elias had not left.

He stood just outside the half-open door, listening.

Marcus continued in a low, furious voice.

“You were never supposed to touch her.”

Isabella’s eyes filled with rage.

“You told me she would leave you tonight.”

“I told you I would handle it.”

“You’ve been saying that for six months.”

The room fell silent again.

Marcus realized too late that everyone had heard.

Elias slowly pushed the door open.

Marcus turned.

Their eyes met.

Elias raised the hotel radio to his mouth.

“Lock the entire nineteenth floor.”

May you like

Then he looked directly at Marcus.

“And secure Mr. Thorne’s phone before he deletes anything.”
