Chapter 9 - The Evaluator's Visit

The following Tuesday, Dr. Eleanor Vance—an experienced, no-nonsense custody evaluator appointed by the family court—sat in the Mercer living room with a leather notebook balanced on her knee.
The penthouse was staged to perfection. Fresh-cut peonies adorned the marble console tables, classical music drifted softly from the ceiling speakers, and the scent of freshly baked vanilla scones filled the air.
"We simply want what provides the most stable, nurturing environment for Maisie," Vanessa explained smoothly, sitting beside Graham on the sofa, her hands resting demurely in her lap. "It has been challenging with Naomi’s erratic behavior, but we are committed to providing a peaceful home."
Dr. Vance adjusted her wire-rimmed glasses, making a deliberate note in her ledger. "And how has Maisie adjusted to living here full-time, Mr. Mercer?"
Graham looked over at the hallway where Maisie was playing quietly with wooden blocks. "She’s been doing remarkably well. Vanessa has created a structured routine for her. Her speech has improved, and she’s sleeping through the night."
"I see," Dr. Vance said, closing her notebook partway. "I'd like to spend twenty minutes speaking with Maisie alone in her nursery, if you don't mind."
"Of course, Doctor," Vanessa replied with a gracious smile, though a faint twitch beneath her left eye betrayed her rising anxiety. "Maisie darling, why don't you show Dr. Vance your dollhouse?"
Maisie stood up slowly, clutching her stuffed bunny with one hand, her other hand buried deep inside the pocket of her overalls. She led the evaluator down the hallway into the nursery and closed the door behind them.
Dr. Vance pulled a small wooden chair up to the low play table, sitting down with a warm, gentle smile. "Hello, Maisie. Do you know who I am?"
Maisie shook her head.
"I'm a helper doctor," Dr. Vance explained softly. "My job is to make sure little girls are happy, safe, and loved in their houses. Can you tell me about living here with Daddy and Vanessa?"
Maisie stared at the table for a long moment. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the small black audio recorder, placing it gently on the wooden surface between them.
Dr. Vance frowned slightly, looking at the professional-grade recording device. "What is this, Maisie?"
"Auntie Vanessa hides under the bed," Maisie whispered, her voice barely audible. "She said Mommy gave me away because I was bad. But the machine talks like Auntie Vanessa when she’s angry."
Dr. Vance’s expression shifted instantly from polite clinical detachment to sharp professional focus. She looked at the little girl’s solemn, earnest face, then picked up the device.
She saw the play button. She pressed it.
The nursery was filled with the clear, crisp recording of Vanessa’s voice:
“...I want Graham to believe she’s completely incompetent before the final hearing. If Naomi gets even unsupervised visitation, Graham will keep talking to her. I need her erased from his life permanently. Do you understand, Julian? Erased...”
Dr. Vance stopped the recording. Her face had gone completely pale, her jaw set into a grim, unyielding line.
"Maisie," Dr. Vance said, her voice dropping to a gentle, steady whisper. "Where did you find this?"
May you like
"In the secret suitcase under Auntie Vanessa’s bed," Maisie said, her hazel eyes completely clear. "With the pictures of Mommy’s car."
Dr. Vance stood up, sliding the recorder into her briefcase and locking the clasp with a decisive click. "Stay right here, sweetheart. I need to speak with your father."
