Chapter 8 - The Secret in the Study

The deadbolt on the guest room door rattled violently as Vanessa shook the brass handle from the hallway.

"Maisie! Open this door right now!" Vanessa commanded, her voice muffled by the thick wood. "Open it, or I will call the building superintendent to break it down!"

Inside the dimly lit guest room, Maisie was trembling under the king-sized bed, clutching her stuffed bunny against her chest so tightly the seams were straining. She held her breath, tears leaving clean streaks through the dust on her cheeks.

After several agonizing minutes, the rattling stopped. Vanessa’s sharp heels clicked away down the hardwood hallway.

Maisie stayed under the bed for what felt like hours, listening to the muffled hum of the city outside. As her eyes adjusted to the shadows beneath the heavy dust ruffle, she noticed a small leather-bound case tucked behind the mahogany bed frame near the baseboard—something Vanessa had hidden away behind the heavy furniture.

Driven by a child’s quiet curiosity, Maisie crawled on her belly and pulled the case toward her. It was a zippered travel portfolio with a gold monogram: V. M.

The zipper was slightly open. Maisie tugged it, revealing several plastic sleeves filled with glossy photographs, handwritten notes, and a slim, high-end digital audio recorder with a blinking green standby light.

Maisie didn't understand what surveillance reports were, but she recognized the pictures instantly. There were photos of her Mommy walking into the grocery store. Photos of Mommy sitting alone in the park crying. Photos of Mommy’s car parked on the street with a flat tire.

And tucked beneath the photos was a pristine, framed photograph of Naomi and Maisie at the zoo—the one Vanessa had stolen from Maisie’s bedroom weeks ago, defaced with red marker across Naomi’s face.

Maisie’s small hands gripped the digital audio recorder. She pressed the large circular button on the side.

A tiny click echoed in the dark space under the bed, followed by Vanessa’s sharp, recorded voice playing through the micro-speaker:

“...Make sure the custody evaluator receives the anonymous tip about her alcohol consumption before Friday, Julian. I don't care if the receipts are fabricated. I want Graham to believe she’s completely incompetent before the final hearing...”

Maisie didn't know what 'incompetent' or 'fabricated' meant. But she knew Vanessa’s voice sounded mean, cold, and scary.

Suddenly, the heavy master bedroom door down the hall swung open with a resounding thud.

"Graham? You're home early!" Vanessa’s voice rang out from the foyer, dripping with sudden sweetness.

"The board meeting wrapped up early," Graham’s deep voice answered, followed by the sound of his heavy luggage dropping to the floor. "Where is Maisie? I brought her a toy from New York."

Under the bed, Maisie shoved the audio recorder into the deep front pocket of her corduroy overalls. She knew what she had to do.
