Chapter 7 - The Cracks in the Mirror

Back at the Mercer penthouse, the victory celebration was silent but palpable.

Vanessa walked through the expansive rooms like a queen inspecting her conquered territory. Graham was at a charity gala in Manhattan for the weekend, leaving Vanessa alone with the household staff, the nanny, and Maisie.

"Mrs. Mercer," the head housekeeper said, approaching with a silver tray of mail. "These documents arrived by courier from Hastings Legal."

"Thank you, Elena. You may take the rest of the evening off. I will manage Maisie myself tonight."

"Yes, ma'am."

Vanessa sat on the velvet sofa, slicing open the courier envelope with a silver letter opener. Inside was the formal decree granting temporary custody, complete with the judge’s official seal. Vanessa ran her manicured finger over the embossed ink.

She had done it. The social circle that had sneered at her after the wedding was now whispering about what a devoted, selfless savior she was to Graham’s neglected daughter. Graham’s mother had even sent an expensive floral arrangement to the penthouse that morning with a note reading: Thank you for bringing order back to Graham’s life.

Vanessa smiled, a cold, intoxicating sensation filling her veins. But as she stood up to pour a glass of champagne, she heard a soft scuffling sound coming from the private study down the hall.

She walked silently across the runner rug and peered through the half-open door.

Maisie was standing on a leather footstool, reaching for the middle drawer of Graham’s private desk.

"What are you doing in here, Maisie?" Vanessa’s voice sliced through the quiet room like a whip.

Maisie gasped, losing her balance and tumbling off the footstool onto the Persian rug. The drawer she had pulled open slammed shut with a sharp crack.

Vanessa walked into the study, towering over the four-year-old. "I asked you a question. You know you are never allowed in Daddy's study."

Maisie scrambled backward until her back hit the solid wood of the bookshelf. Her chin trembled, but this time, there was something different in the child's eyes—a flicker of defiance that hadn't been there before.

"Where is Mommy’s picture?" Maisie demanded, her small voice shaking with anger. "You took Mommy’s picture off Daddy's desk and threw it in the trash can!"

Vanessa froze. Three weeks ago, while Graham was traveling, Vanessa had taken the framed photo of Graham, Naomi, and baby Maisie from the back of the bookshelf and tossed it down the penthouse incinerator chute. She had assumed the child was asleep in the nursery when she did it.

"You shouldn't spy on grown-ups, Maisie," Vanessa said, her voice dropping into a dangerously low register. "It’s very naughty."

"You're not my mommy!" Maisie yelled, tears streaming down her red cheeks. "You're mean! You tell lies to Daddy!"

Vanessa felt a sudden, irrational surge of panic. If this child started screaming accusations in front of the court evaluator next week, everything she had built could unravel.

Vanessa stepped forward, grabbing Maisie’s small wrist with a grip that was far too tight. "You listen to me, you ungrateful little brat. Your mother doesn't want you. She gave you away because you were too noisy and bad. If you say one word to Daddy or anyone else, I will make sure you never see her again. Do you hear me?"

Maisie stared at her, terrified, the cruel words sinking deep into her child psyche. But as Vanessa squeezed her wrist, Maisie looked down at Vanessa’s other hand—at the glittering wedding diamond—and suddenly bit down on Vanessa’s thumb with all the strength in her four-year-old jaw.

"Ow! You little beast!" Vanessa shrieked, recoiling and shoving the child back.

Maisie didn't cry. She scrambled to her feet and darted out of the study, running straight down the hall into the guest bedroom, slamming the door and locking the deadbolt from the inside.

Vanessa stood in the study, panting, staring at the distinct red teeth marks on her thumb.

The battle wasn't won. It was just beginning.
