Chapter 8 - VANESSA’S REAL REASON

Vanessa sent a photograph.

Daniel was tied to a chair inside what looked like a hotel suite.

Blood ran from his lip.

Peter Sloan sat beside him.

I zoomed in on the window.

Ocean.

Marina lights.

A curved balcony railing.

I knew the building.

The Halcyon Resort.

Vanessa’s family owned the penthouse.

Chief Reed started calling tactical units.

Tom stopped him.

“She’ll see them.”

Reed snapped, “Your alternative?”

“We give her what she wants.”

“We don’t have the ledger.”

Tom looked at me.

“Yes, we do.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Richard hid it with you.”

“I never met Richard.”

“Not knowingly.”

Tom reached inside his coat and removed an old photograph.

It showed me at twenty-seven, standing outside County General after the ambush.

My ribs were wrapped.

My face was swollen.

A man in janitor’s clothes pushed a wheelchair behind me.

Richard Vale.

Daniel’s father.

I remembered him.

Not his face.

His kindness.

He had handed me my coat when I left the hospital.

Inside the coat pocket, I had later found a small silver Saint Michael medal.

I still had it.

Tom watched my face.

“You remember.”

I whispered, “The medal.”

“Richard told me it was insurance.”

We rushed back to my house.

I opened the jewelry box beside my bed.

The medal was where I had left it for years.

Tom examined the edge.

Then twisted it.

The medal split open.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

Daniel’s father had put evidence in my pocket eight years ago.

And I had carried it through three homes, one marriage, and countless investigations without ever knowing.

We loaded the card onto an isolated laptop.

Folders appeared.

Payments.

Names.

Judges.

Developers.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Then one folder labeled FAMILY.

Inside was a video.

Richard Vale sat at a desk.

Older.

Exhausted.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If Daniel ever sees this, I’m sorry.”

My chest tightened.

Daniel’s father continued.

“Arthur Voss has been using Vale Holdings as a laundering channel. Vanessa’s father, Victor Lang, helped him. I tried to stop them.”

Tom whispered, “There.”

Richard leaned closer.

“But there’s something Daniel must know.”

The video suddenly froze.

Password required.

Tom swore.

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“Elena.”

Her voice was almost cheerful.

“You have thirty minutes.”

“Let me speak to Daniel.”

A pause.

Then his voice.

“Elena?”

“I’m here.”

“Don’t give her anything.”

Vanessa hit him.

I heard the chair crash.

My hand tightened around the phone.

Vanessa came back.

“Bring the ledger.”

“Vanessa, listen to me.”

“No. You listen.”

Her voice changed.

All the polished arrogance disappeared.

What remained was panic.

“My father spent his entire life building our name. Richard tried to destroy us. I will not let you finish what he started.”

I understood then.

This wasn’t just jealousy.

She had invited me to that party because she believed I was the last threat to a secret her family had protected for years.

“What happens if I bring it?”

“You get Daniel.”

“And Sloan?”

A pause.

“If he behaves.”

Then Daniel shouted from the background.

“Elena! Vanessa’s father is here!”

The call ended.

Tom looked at me.

Victor Lang.

Vanessa’s father.

The man who had supposedly died three years earlier.

I grabbed my jacket.

May you like

Apparently, the dead were having a very busy week.
