Chapter 1 - THE SCAR

Vanessa Vale tore my dress in front of four hundred people.

Not accidentally.

Not discreetly.

She hooked two fingers into the silk at my left side, yanked hard, and smiled when the seam split from my ribs to my hip.

The music stopped.

My skin hit the cool ocean air.

And suddenly, everyone at the Azure Crown Beach Club could see the pale, jagged bullet scar curving beneath my left arm.

Vanessa lifted her microphone.

“Now everyone can see what kind of woman Daniel married.”

A few people gasped.

Others raised their phones.

Vanessa looked beautiful beneath the chandeliers in a silver designer gown that probably cost more than my first car.

She also looked thrilled.

My husband, Daniel Vale, stood ten feet away.

His face went white.

“Vanessa.”

His voice was low.

“Stop.”

She laughed.

“Why? Elena told everyone she was a security consultant.”

She looked around the pavilion.

“She forgot to mention the part where she used to run with criminals.”

A nervous laugh moved through the crowd.

I pulled the torn fabric together with one hand.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel always had a weakness for damaged things.”

That one landed.

I saw it on Daniel’s face.

Anger.

Shame.

And something worse.

Guilt.

For three months, anonymous social-media accounts had been posting photographs of me outside police stations, old warehouses, and rough neighborhoods.

Vanessa had built a story around them.

Elena Cross.

Criminal associate.

Gold digger.

Former gang girlfriend.

Daniel’s embarrassing new wife.

The truth was much harder to explain.

And much more dangerous for Vanessa.

I looked at her microphone.

“Are you done?”

Her smile widened.

“Not even close.”

Two assistants rolled a giant screen behind her.

Bank statements appeared.

Vale Holdings.

Three shell charities.

Millions of dollars.

And my name beside several transfers.

The crowd exploded into whispers.

Vanessa raised her champagne.

“My foundation recently uncovered evidence that Elena Cross stole money from my family’s company.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

Vanessa ignored him.

“Daniel, I hope your prenup is strong.”

I saw phones rise everywhere.

Exactly what she wanted.

Public humiliation.

Public evidence.

A public collapse.

She expected me to cry.

She expected me to run.

Instead, I looked toward the eastern entrance.

A security guard quietly closed the gate.

Then locked it.

Beyond the palm trees, a black sedan stopped beside the curb.

Right on time.

I looked back at Vanessa.

“You spent two million dollars on this party?”

She blinked.

“Yes.”

“That was generous.”

Her smile slipped.

“What?”

I nodded toward the screen.

“You gathered every witness in one place.”

Then I looked around at the politicians, investors, reporters, executives, and city officials staring at us.

“And you just displayed your crimes on a forty-foot screen.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Then someone near the entrance shouted.

“Police Chief coming through!”

May you like

And Vanessa dropped her champagne glass.
