Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYAL

Eleanor Vale had left headquarters during the beach club emergency.

Security footage showed her entering a gray sedan.

Voluntarily.

Daniel watched the recording three times.

“No.”

I stood beside him.

“She knew the camera was there.”

“She looked scared.”

“She also looked directly into the lens.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“I can’t do this again.”

I understood.

His father.

His mother.

Vanessa.

His company.

Every piece of his life had become evidence.

Chief Reed entered carrying the red ledger.

“We found Eleanor’s name.”

Daniel looked up.

“Where?”

“Payments.”

His face collapsed.

“How much?”

“Twenty million over eight years.”

Daniel sat down.

I opened the ledger.

The payments began months after Richard’s death.

Protection money.

Silence money.

Or something else.

Vanessa called again.

This time I put her on speaker.

“I know where Eleanor went.”

Daniel stood.

“How?”

“My father kept a house outside Montauk. Hale used it for private meetings.”

She gave us the address.

Daniel’s voice turned cold.

“Why are you helping us?”

Vanessa went silent.

Then she said, “Because I spent years blaming Elena for taking my life.”

I looked at the phone.

“And?”

“And I just learned my father designed the cage I was living in.”

Her voice cracked.

“I want out.”

We drove to Montauk before sunrise.

The house sat above the cliffs.

No police lights.

No sirens.

We approached quietly.

Inside, Eleanor sat at a dining table.

Hale stood behind her.

He had somehow escaped custody during the emergency.

Of course he had.

Two corrupt officers had helped him.

Both were already under arrest.

Hale held a gun.

Eleanor held something else.

The cassette recorder from Richard’s archive.

I frowned.

I had put it in an evidence bag.

She had taken it during the evacuation.

Daniel stepped inside.

“Mom.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

Hale smiled.

“Everyone’s always sorry at the end.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Were you working with him?”

“For years.”

The words broke him.

I saw it.

Eleanor immediately shook her head.

“Not willingly.”

“Twenty million dollars.”

“I never spent it.”

“Then why take it?”

“Because every payment had a tracking code.”

Chief Reed entered behind us.

Eleanor looked at him.

“I was building a record.”

Hale’s expression changed.

She lifted the cassette recorder.

“Richard told me if I ever found the courage to fix what I had done, I should record everything.”

Hale raised his gun toward her.

Daniel shouted.

I moved.

The gun fired.

Eleanor fell.

Daniel caught her.

Chief Reed tackled Hale into the wall.

I kicked the gun away.

Officers stormed the house.

Hale screamed as they cuffed him.

“You think this changes anything?”

I knelt beside Eleanor.

Blood stained her shoulder.

Not fatal.

She looked at Daniel.

“I was trying to finish what your father started.”

Daniel held her hand.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

She looked at me.

Then toward the cassette recorder.

“Play it.”

I pressed the button.

Hale’s recorded voice filled the room.

Names.

Payments.

Murders.

Bribes.

Everything.

Chief Reed listened in silence.

Then another voice appeared on the tape.

Vanessa.

Daniel looked at me.

Her recorded words were clear.

“If Elena dies, Daniel will come back to me.”

Daniel’s face went still.

May you like

And I realized Vanessa had not been nearly as innocent as she now wanted us to believe.
