Chapter 9 - THE DEADLY REVELATION

Ethan stared at Viktor in complete silence, the rain drumming heavily against the pavement around them.
“My mother died in a car accident twenty years ago,” Ethan said, his voice cold and defensive.
“That’s the official story,” Viktor replied, taking a step closer.
“That is the lie your father told you to keep you alive.”
“Your mother didn't die in an accident, Ethan.”
“She was murdered because she discovered what the Vance Syndicate was actually doing behind closed doors.”
Ethan felt his throat tighten.
“The Vance Syndicate?” Ethan repeated, shaking his head.
“My father was an investor! He ran an import-export business!”
Viktor let out a bitter laugh, wiping the rainwater from his face.
“Your father ran a front company, Ethan,” Viktor explained gravely.
“A front company for a massive international intelligence network.”
“Five years ago, your father realized that an insider was attempting to take over his entire network.”
“They sent Eleanor to infiltrate your life.”
“She was trained from day one to act as the perfect wife, to win your trust, and to monitor your father’s declining health.”
Ethan felt like he had been struck by lightning.
Five years of marriage.
Five years of shared memories, birthdays, and anniversaries.
Every smile, every embrace, every word of affection... was a calculated tactical operation.
“Why?” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking under the emotional weight.
“What does she want from the vault?”
“Your father built a master override drive,” Viktor explained, pointing to the brass key in Ethan’s pocket.
“That key doesn't just open a physical safe.”
“It activates a physical hard drive containing the full names, accounts, and true identities of every operative in the syndicate.”
“Including Eleanor’s real handlers.”
“If she gets that drive, she can wipe her past clean and sell the network to the highest bidder for hundreds of millions of dollars.”
“If you open that safe first... you expose them all.”
Suddenly, a loud metallic screech rang out from the top of the shipping containers above them.
A red laser dot appeared on the chest of Viktor’s coat.
“SNIPER!” Viktor roared, lunging forward and tackling Ethan to the wet ground.
THWIP!
A heavy sniper round shattered the pavement where Viktor had been standing a second before.
Sparks and stone fragments sprayed across the area.
“Get in the shipping container!” Viktor screamed, pulling Ethan toward an open steel door nearby.
Maria grabbed the little girl and scrambled inside the dark metal box just as another gunshot echoed through the harbor.
THWIP!
The bullet struck the heavy steel container door with a deafening CLANG!
Ethan threw himself inside, grabbing the heavy metal handle and yanking the door shut.
They were trapped inside a steel box in total darkness.

Outside, the sound of multiple heavy vehicle engines echoed through the storm.
Eleanor had tracked them down.
