Chapter 16 - THE VAULT OF ECHOES

The heavy iron door groaned as ancient gears turned deep inside the wall.

Dust cascaded from the concrete ceiling like grey snow.

Ethan pulled the heavy wheel handle, exerting every ounce of his remaining strength.

The vault door swung open with a deep, echoing metallic hiss.

Inside lay a small, sterile room lit by flickering fluorescent tube lights.

In the center of the room sat no piles of cash, no diamond cases, and no traditional computer hard drives.

Instead, a single black iron pedestal held a glowing glass cylinder filled with liquid.

Suspended inside the fluid was a vintage reel-to-reel magnetic audio tape and a modern encrypted satellite drive.

Eleanor stared into the room, her breath catching in her throat.

“The archives,” she whispered, her voice devoid of its usual malice, filled only with awe.

“Your father didn't just record operational data, Ethan.”

“He recorded every conversation, every betrayal, and every command given by Arthur for thirty years.”

Arthur’s voice boomed down from the iron catwalk high above.

“Step away from the pedestal, Ethan!” Arthur ordered, stepping to the railing with a heavy automatic shotgun.

Several mercenaries lined the upper railing, their weapons trained directly on the vault entrance.

“You’ve served your purpose, nephew,” Arthur said, a cold, ruthless smile spreading across his face.

“You brought me the key.”

“Now you can join your father and your useless lawyer in the ground.”

Ethan stood inside the doorway of the vault, his hand resting on the pedestal base.

He looked up at his uncle with absolute calmness.

“You’re too late, Arthur,” Ethan called out, his voice echoing clearly through the massive factory space.

Arthur frowned, his eyebrows knitting together in confusion.

“What are you talking about?” Arthur demanded.

Ethan held up a small black remote trigger he had taken from the vault pedestal control panel.

“My father knew you would come here eventually,” Ethan explained softly.

“The moment this vault door opened, an automated signal was broadcast to the national federal database.”

“And this key didn't just unlock the door.”

“It started a ten-minute countdown on the thermite charges buried beneath this entire facility.”
