Chapter 7 - The Box

Dr. Shaw’s widow lived forty minutes outside the city.
Her name was Helen.
She opened the door before I knocked twice.
“You’re Daniel Hart.”
“Yes.”
Then she saw Mara.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
“Oh my God.”
Mara froze.
Helen whispered, “He said you might still be alive.”
The words hit all three of us.
We sat in a small living room filled with family photographs.
Helen disappeared upstairs.
She returned carrying a gray metal box.
“My husband was not a good man at the end.”
She placed it on the table.
“But he was afraid.”
“Of Vivi?”
Mara asked.
Helen nodded.
“And your mother.”
I looked away.
Helen pushed the box toward me.
“He said if anything happened to him, Daniel Hart needed to see this.”
Inside were medical records.
Payment ledgers.
Photographs.
And a small digital recorder.
I pressed play.
Dr. Shaw’s voice came first.
“I was paid to certify Mara Ellis as an immediate danger to herself and her child.”
Mara’s breathing stopped.
“I had never examined Ms. Ellis before signing that initial assessment.”
I closed my eyes.
The recording continued.
“The medical evidence provided to me was fabricated.”
Helen began crying quietly.
“I knew it,” Mara whispered.
Shaw’s voice continued.
“Vivienne Cross delivered the documents.”
Vivienne’s maiden name.
“She told me the Hart family wanted the situation resolved privately.”
My hand tightened around the recorder.
“She provided medication to be administered before admission.”
Mara’s face went white.
“I knew it.”
I reached for her without thinking.
Then stopped.
Four years had changed the rules between us.
Mara noticed.
She looked away.
Shaw kept speaking.
“After six months, I attempted to release Ms. Ellis.”
A pause.
“Mrs. Cecilia Hart threatened to expose financial misconduct connected to my clinic.”
I stared at nothing.
“So I continued signing the orders.”
Helen whispered, “He hated himself.”
Mara answered quietly.
“He still signed them.”
Helen nodded through tears.
“I know.”
There was one final file.
A photograph of a handwritten ledger.
Monthly transfers from the Hart Family Foundation to Briar Hill.
Beside each payment were initials.
VC.
Vivienne Cross.
CH.
Cecilia Hart.
Then another set appeared beside the final six payments.
DH.
My initials.
My blood ran cold.
“I never approved these.”
Helen looked confused.
“They came from your account.”
My phone suddenly rang.
Rachel.
I answered.
Her voice was frantic.
“Daniel, where are you?”
“What happened?”
“It’s Noah.”
I stood.
“What about Noah?”
“Vivi came to the house with two police officers and a custody order.”
My heart stopped.
“Rachel—”
“She took him.”
Mara shot to her feet.
“No.”
Rachel’s next words turned panic into terror.
May you like
“Daniel, Vivi took Noah.”
