Chapter 11 - The Video From My Office

“I was there.”
The words tasted terrible.
Mara stared at me.
“What were you doing?”
“Working.”
“Alone?”
I tried to remember.
Four years was a lifetime.
Then something surfaced.
“No.”
Mara’s face tightened.
“Who was with you?”
“Vivi.”
Silence.
“She brought dinner.”
Benjamin looked up.
“Did you leave your computer unlocked?”
Probably.
I hated the answer.
“Yes.”
Mara turned away.
I caught her arm gently.
“Mara.”
She pulled free.
“Please.”
“I didn’t do this.”
“I know you didn’t lock me in Briar Hill with your own hands.”
“That isn’t what I said.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“But you trusted everyone who did.”
That hit exactly where it should have.
I let my hand fall.
“You’re right.”
She hadn’t expected that.
“I failed you.”
My voice lowered.
“And I failed Noah.”
Mara’s anger softened, but only slightly.
“You searched for me.”
“For eighteen months.”
“Then you stopped.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I looked through the courthouse window.
“Because the investigators found photographs.”
“Mexico?”
“Yes.”
“They weren’t me.”
“I know that now.”
“You married Vivi.”
I swallowed.
“Yes.”
Mara looked away.
Before either of us could say more, Benjamin rushed into the room.
“Company security found something.”
He placed a laptop on the table.
A four-year-old security archive had been recovered from backup.
My office.
11:38 p.m.
I was visible behind my desk.
Vivienne sat across from me.
We were eating.
At 11:41, I stood and left.
The video had no sound.
I remembered.
Noah had woken upstairs.
I had gone to check on him.
On-screen, Vivi immediately moved around the desk.
She touched my keyboard.
Inserted a small device.
Typed.
Forty-two seconds later, she removed it.
Then she returned to her chair.
My stomach turned.
Mara watched without blinking.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at her.
“For what?”
“For doubting you.”
“You had every reason.”
The courtroom doors opened.
A bailiff called us back.
Benjamin smiled for the first time.
“This is enough to destroy her credibility.”
It almost was.
Judge Foster suspended Vivi’s custody order.
Noah was returned to me pending investigation.
Mara received immediate supervised contact while the court reviewed the fraudulent records.
Noah ran toward us in the hallway.
He hugged Mara first.
Then me.
I didn’t mind.
For the first time in years, he looked peaceful.
Then reporters appeared.
Dozens.
Questions exploded.
“Daniel!”
“Mara!”
“Did the Hart Foundation pay to imprison her?”
“Is Vivienne being investigated?”
“Did you help fake Mara’s death?”
I pulled Noah close.
Security moved us through the crowd.
Then one reporter shouted something that stopped me.
“Mr. Hart, what do you say about the second child?”
I turned.
“What?”
Mara froze beside me.
The reporter raised a document.
“Medical records say Ms. Ellis was pregnant when she entered Briar Hill.”
I looked at Mara.
Her face had gone completely white.
“What second child?”
Mara whispered, “Daniel…”
Her eyes filled.
May you like
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
