Chapter 14 - Noah’s Real Secret

For five seconds, I couldn’t move.

Paternity review.

Two words powerful enough to reopen every wound in the room.

Mara grabbed the file.

Vivienne laughed.

“Go ahead.”

I looked at Mara.

“Did you know about this?”

“No.”

She opened the folder.

Inside was a DNA report.

My name.

Noah’s name.

Probability of paternity:

99.99 percent.

I exhaled so hard my knees almost weakened.

Vivi’s smile vanished.

Mara stared at her.

“This says Daniel is his father.”

“I know.”

“Then what secret?”

Vivienne’s eyes moved toward another page.

Mara turned it over.

A second DNA report.

Same date.

Different test.

Vivienne Cross.

Noah Hart.

Probability of maternity:

0 percent.

Mara stared at her.

“I already knew that.”

Vivi’s mouth twisted.

“You did.”

She looked at me.

“But Daniel didn’t know I tested him.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why did you test Noah?”

“Because your mother needed certainty.”

Cecilia had wanted proof Noah was a Hart before helping eliminate his mother.

That was the secret.

Not paternity.

Motive.

Noah’s inheritance.

My father’s trust gave controlling shares in several family companies to my biological children.

If Mara remained Noah’s legal mother, she controlled those shares on his behalf if anything happened to me.

If Mara disappeared and Vivi adopted him, control moved into Vivi’s hands.

Almost one billion dollars sat behind the word motherhood.

Mara looked sick.

“You did all this for money?”

Vivienne’s expression cracked.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I was tired of being invisible!”

The words exploded out of her.

Police stopped moving.

Vivi’s voice shook.

“Mara walked into every room and people loved her.”

She looked at me.

“You loved her.”

Then at Cecilia.

“Your family trusted her.”

Back to Mara.

“You had Daniel.”

“You had Noah.”

“You had the life I wanted.”

Mara stared at her.

“So you stole it.”

Vivienne’s eyes filled.

“I thought if you were gone long enough, everyone would forget.”

Mara’s voice broke.

“He didn’t.”

She pointed toward Noah’s photograph inside the file.

“My son didn’t.”

Detective Reyes stepped forward.

“Vivienne Cross Hart, turn around.”

Vivi didn’t resist.

The handcuffs clicked.

She looked at me one last time.

“You’re acting like you’re innocent.”

I said nothing.

“Where were you when Mara needed you?”

That landed.

Because monsters rarely survive alone.

They survive because somebody lies.

Somebody looks away.

Somebody trusts the easier story.

Vivi was taken to the patrol car.

Mara stood beside me.

“I have one more hearing tomorrow.”

“I know.”

“The judge will ask what I want.”

I looked at her.

“You should ask for everything.”

She studied my face.

“Even if that means taking Noah away from you?”

My throat tightened.

“If that’s what keeps him safe.”

Mara said nothing.

The next morning, Judge Foster asked the question I had feared.

“Ms. Ellis, are you requesting sole custody?”

Mara looked at Noah.

Then she looked at me.

And said:

May you like

“Yes.”
