Chapter 3 — The Secret Account

My attorney, Rachel Morgan, placed a folder on my desk.

Inside were eight years of financial records.

“Evelyn, you need to see this.”

I opened the first page.

Margaret’s account.

Luxury purchases.

Designer stores.

Private clubs.

International trips.

Nothing about medical bills.

Nothing about emergencies.

Nothing about survival.

It was all lifestyle.

Then Rachel pointed to another account.

Daniel’s name was attached.

My stomach tightened.

“What is that?”

Rachel looked serious.

“Your husband has been transferring money to her.”

I stared at the document.

“How much?”

“Nearly $200,000 over five years.”

The room became quiet.

Daniel wasn’t just allowing it.

He was helping.

The man who watched me work until midnight.

The man who kissed me goodbye every morning.

The man who promised forever.

Had secretly been feeding the person who was draining me.

That evening, Daniel called.

“Evie, we can fix this.”

I answered calmly.

“No.”

“Please listen.”

“No, Daniel. You listen.”

I looked at the police report sitting beside me.

“You didn’t lose your wife because your mother attacked me.”

A pause.

“You lost your wife when you watched.”

And then I hung up.

But I didn’t know…

Margaret was preparing her own attack.
